I have, but then again I used the second generation iPhone (3G) for nearly six years. My current iPhone is four years old, it is dying. The headphone jack quit. The lightning port is so loose that when the phone vibrates, it knocks the charging cable loose. The edges of the glass are chipping on all four sides. Several times a week the battery suddenly goes from >40% down to 1%. Also, the speaker is not loud enough to hear clearly. I think that's from getting damp too many times here in Seattle.

I had my lightning port do that on an older iPhone. That was sorted when I cleaned out the lint in the port. Then the port worked perfectly again.

I had a 3G, 4GS, 2x 5G, and 2x 6GS. The 3G is the only one that didnâ(TM)t fail with a known manufacturing defect. (Why do I keep buying Apple? I donâ(TM)t like Android.)

All joking aside, most "portable" electronics last 7, and anything that doesn't have wear components (eg no mechanical parts, incandescent light bulbs or CRT's) can last 20.
The problem is the disposality issue. If these devices were engineered to last 20 years, they would last 20 years and not a day more. But technology leapfrogged itself into this position where if you engineer a device to last 20 years, the supporting technology (eg the radios) license will expire long before the device does. I've replaced my "glued" iphone battery twice. The case isn't glued it's interference fit, and it's easily removed with a suction cup. The battery isn't glued either - it's held in place with two sided tape that's a little hard to remove, but even if you're not careful (I'm not) you can pry it out in under 5 minutes.

The problem really is that the radio tech can not overlap. So if AT&T decides to switch to 5G, they will shut down the 3G network without even a second thought, and anyone using 7 year old phones still are told to buy a new one.
I guess that's a US thing... Here in Finland at least we have both (I'm not actually certain of how good the 5G coverage is around the country, but I'm guessing that all, or at least most, cities would already be covered. Any other Finns out there, please correct me if I'm wrong; I don't have a 5G phone myself).

My iPhone 6 is almost 4 years old now, and it's starting to show its age. The touch screen is starting to lose it's responsiveness, I've already had to replace the battery, and application load times are pretty painful if you are trying to use Apple CarPlay.
The XS is insanely expensive (hell, I'm wondering if XS actually stands for eXpenSive) but the XR seems reasonably priced and has some nice new features.

Look, first off, I'm totally with you. I hate the trend toward larger and larger sizes. My favorite physical smartphone design of all time was the iPhone 4. I am currently an Xperia Z5 Compact user precisely *because* of the size *and* the fact that at the time of purchase it was the best compact-sized Android phone model.

I'm really just trying to predict a future outcome here. I have a 256GB iPhone X and it's a perfectly good phone. Also still making monthly payments on it through my T-Mobile contract.
The one thing I really like about the Xs, though, is that ability to adjust depth of field on the fly after taking a picture. That's something I spent a lot of money on a Lytro camera, a few years ago, to be able to do. And it's pretty cool thinking my iPhone I always carry with me already could do that now, too.

I bought an iPhone X at launch, and while the new phones also look nice, I really like the size of the X compared to the Plus I had previously... you get nearly as much screen vertically as with an older plus.
That Max model does look really impressive screen-wise though. But my next phone probably will stay minimized instead of maximized.

I want a phone with a 4.5" screen (5" is theabsolute maximum), multiple day battery life, a proper headphone jack, good performance (sadly that probably means at least 3GB RAM) and an OS free from OEM bloatware.
I don't care about wireless charging, fingerprint/face recognition nonsense, "digital assistants" or any of that bullshit.

There are none I think.
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact comes close from size and performance but there is no headphone jack and a little bit of Sony bloatware.
BlackBerry KEY2 fulfills your screen size requirement but it is actually larger than the screen because it has a keyboard.
Battery life always depends heavily on usage of course.

I was excited to get an iPhone XR until I discovered the screen resolution is 720p. WTF? It's ridiculous that Apple is putting an outdated display like this into a phone in 2018 - it's hard to see this an anything other than a deliberate hobbling of this model in order to differentiate the more expensive XS models.
I could wait another year to see if Apple have a decent sub-$1000 phone next time around, but seeing as I need a phone now it's gonna be Galaxy S9 for me.
