That's as much politics as anything else. At the end of the day "sub-species" or even species can be a little arbitrary. It depends on where you draw the hard line on a spectrum of traits. See the for example the north american white tail, mule deer and blacktail deer. The common understanding of sub-species is little more than the common person's understanding of race but there are a ton of different definitions.

This story was posted a few days ago and I doubt anyone will read this response but I'll go anyway. The article mentions that masks are better than nothing but does not quantify that. If it reduces infection by 1-5% for example but people no longer quarantine and are miling about more often this isn't even a negligible amount, it is destructive and contributes to infection. I quoted the part that wasn't the equivalent of editorializing or a snippit of a conclusion without context.

I've not been able to locate a single rigorous study that agrees with you on cloth masks Example: "A trial we conducted in Vietnam of 2-layered cotton cloth masks compared to medical masks showed a lower rate of infection in the medical mask group, and a 13 times higher risk of infection in the cloth mask arm (MacIntyre et al., 2015). The study suggests cloth masks may increase the risk of infection (MacIntyre et al., 2015), but may not be generalizable to all homemade masks. "

My issue with the mask rules is that they don't mandate any kind of mask. If they at least set "surgical" mask as a minimum requirement it would make more sense but I've not seen any large scale studies that indicate influenza or covid to be impeded in a significant amount by these diy pretty cloth masks that people choose to wear. I mean, if I need to wear one ok but the reasoning is not more scientific than the requirement that I wear pants. It just seems like a comfort blanket or empty virtual signaling.
