Comment That's not what base power means (Score 1) 113

Base power means that wind and solar can provide energy around the clock forming the base of a power grid.

In the past they were limited because well with solar you have the sun and with wind you have the wind and if you don't have those two things then you suddenly don't have power

Wind and solar are so efficient now that as long as you're deploying both of them together you can run your entire power grid off of them so long as you have enough land which America most definitely does. If it's one thing our country has besides transphobes and homophobes it's lots of land that has no other use except the plop wind and solar installations on.

We don't need nucular. In certain select scenarios nuclear could be a nice thing to have if we would solve the social problems with it but we absolutely will not.

The only thing half this country hates more than queer people is solving social problems. And unfortunately that half gets to be in charge way too often to risk nuclear power.

Stop putting stupid morons who freak out over every little moral panic in charge and puts competent scientists and administrators in charge and we will talk about nuclear. But that means giving up all sorts of stuff you probably find a lot of fun.

Because the sort of person I come across is really into nuclear power is usually one of those libertarian types who always seems to vote Republican but is always talking about free speech but was very happy when Jimmy Kimmel got yanked off the air.

That kind of nonsensical contradictory and hypocritical thinking is not something I am willing to risk giving a nuclear power plant too. Fix your damn shit and we will talk.

PHEVs have been disappearing from the market. They are more complex than either ICE or BEV. They cost more to maintain. They ate less comfortable than BEVs. After driving a PHEV for 10 years, I don't think these vehicles will gain mcih market share. Certainly not at the pace that BEVs are.

PHEV sales are actually growing, and in some areas growing faster than BEV sales. I have both a BEV and a PHEV. They are different cars. The BEV is nice for in-town driving, but it's bad for long-distance trips. Yes, charging on long-distance trips has improved dramatically, but even so, it's still night and day compared to my PHEV that gets 6 hours of highway driving before I need to stop. Since the PHEV allows me to drive almost exclusively on the battery for most of my driving, I would get rid of the BEV before getting rid of the PHEV.

Comment Debt (Score 1) 113

"OpenAI and other large tech companies are "relying increasingly on debt to support their unprecedented spending"

There is indeed a huge amount of debt being incurred for this AI expansion. However, it should be pointed out that a significant amount of AI spending comes from hyperscalars and other large companies that are not borrowing for this expansion. In fact, even with the AI spending, the bottom lines for these companies look very healthy. From the perspective of Nvidia, this large company spending is likely the majority of sales.

Microsoft isn't likely to sell the hardware on. They probably will of course rent out the data centers but that doesn't mean you can buy the hardware to build your own Data center.

It will reduce demand on Nvidia and AMD gpus though so there is that aspect. But it won't be full on competition in the same market space. So the effect will be muted somewhat.

To get them a bunch of free publicity from right wing noodle brains freaking the fuck out. It worked because it always works.

It's a little dangerous these days if you don't back down quickly because Trump is so unhinged that he will sometimes send the Department of Justice off on people.

But that's mostly a function of how long you want to let the controversy Go versus whether or not you want to take a risk of becoming the next Bud lite.

It's not a hard line to walk though and it's an easy way to get lots of free advertising and eyeballs on whatever the hell you're trying to sell.
