SNAP is available to those with household income below 130% of the poverty line.
The poverty line is $32,150 for a family of four, with an additional $5,500 for each additional dependent. There is no limit on the number of dependents.
A worker earning $100k with twelve dependents would qualify for SNAP.
about as much as having a former WWF executive with a single-digit IQ serving as Education Secy.
I'm sure glad I have a real education in the 80's.
Walmart and McDonalds are two of the biggest employers in America, so it is no surprise that they are also top employers of SNAP and Medicaid recipients.
Even people making $100k can qualify for SNAP if they have enough dependents.
Requiring employers to know each worker's living situation and pay accordingly is ridiculous.
And if you're paid in RMB
Paid? I thought we were talk'n about bonds, not paychecks.
last time I was in China the unofficial exchange rate you could get for dollars on the street was 10 times what the government allowed at official exchange places?
You must have been in China a long, long time ago.
There hasn't been a black market for currency exchange in decades.
This is bizzarre consider you can't even trade RMB freely.
I have a condo in Shanghai, so I can use RMB to pay the HOA fee.
I use the condo when I'm working in my employer's Shanghai office. My in-laws are living there now.
PRC has currency controls permanently in place.
The limit is $50k USD out per year. Inward transfers are unlimited. But it's not difficult to work around the limits. Just ask a friend to make the transfer for you. Of course, this is illegal, but asking friends to commit crimes on your behalf is kinda a normal thing in China.
Most Walmart and McDonalds employees do not qualify for public assistance.
Those that do are primary or sole breadwinners for their household with dependents.
If you feel it is wrong for these people to work at Walmart for the wages offered, then a simple solution is to require them to disclose their household situation on the job application so Walmart can avoid hiring them.
Then you no longer need to worry about taxpayers "subsidizing" Walmart.
Revenue is up 27%.
Revenue means little.
You need to look at net income (profit).
But DoorDash is not a charity and has no reason to pay drivers more than what is needed to recruit and retain them.
I'm told tipping is not optional
Tipping is optional. According to Google, 25% of DoorDash customers do not tip.
and the person serving me food needs it to live.
There are starving children in Africa. If you're doing nothing for them, you probably shouldn't feel too guilty about the DoorDash deliverer.
So if that is the case why are poor people eating out and taking food out of the servers mouth if they can't tip?
Not using DoorDash at all is taking away even more money.
Disclaimer: I don't eat restaurant food, so I've never used DoorDash. I use InstaCart for groceries, and tip the default amount.
If I'm paying a delivery fee, why does the food cost more before the fee? What part of the fee is funding the delivery?
It is standard marketing psychology.
People will pay X for food and Y for delivery, but won't pay (X+Y) for the food with free delivery.
When people comparison shop, they will compare the food cost but ignore the delivery fee. So it is better to shove some of the cost into tack-on fees.
UberDash wants the tip to come after the customer commits to buy so the cost of the tip isn't factored into the decision.
It will be utterly hilarious if/when the extreme Texas gerrymander actually loses them seats in Texas.
They had to make 'solid red' districts be just 'lean red' in order to get the new 5 seats.
A big enough blue wave and oopsie.
So both fossil fuel and nuclear get MASSIVE subsidies by not having to pay for their emissions/waste. If gas prices included the cost to sequester the CO2 they released, they'd be FAR more expensive. Same for nuclear and it's waste storage and disposal. It isn't priced into the per kwh cost consumers pay.
Where solar and all renewables are *cheap* is long term - 50-100+ years out. Every ton of CO2 we don't emit this year saves $$$ money in reducing the increase in disaster spending gov'ts will definitely have to spend.
Hence gov't subsides are the cheapest thing govts could be doing, but stupid is gonna stupid.
minor nit - in the 2024 election Trump most definitely did have 'experience in govt'
Which is why Ranked Choice Voting will be a game changer....and why BOTH parties are generally not in favor of it.
It lets you protest vote all you want...and still cast a sanity vote.
Are you saying you would rather be paid in RMB?
At the same interest rate, I'd definitely prefer RMB over USD.
And wasn't the C in BRICS supposed to be using the BRICS currency for trade, not RMB or dollars?
RMB is the BRICS currency.
Would you prefer rubles?
