Comment about that standard support... OpenTherm (Score 1, Informative) 39

their explanation was that support in EU was hard

translation : europe has a standard (opentherm) and the market for controlling old not standard is large but complicated and those with the standard do not want nest, the support costs in europe are large compared to USA so lets just abandon it

so now its up to european manufacturers to support opentherm and matter standards

what is really pathetic is they claimed support for opentherm but only in europe so americans are still in a simple ecosystem and nest can dominate with their "smart"

Comment DRM - Music industry and expats complain.... (Score 2) 24

DRM is there because the MUSIC industry wants it and wrote it into contracts

the BBC do not hold the rights to all music and video they want to broadcast they have to pay a license they recoup this cost by charging a license fee and by selling the productions they have to the commercial market

the UK cant keep funding expats and others who do not pay a license fee

I expect that expat community will be the most vocal but honestly they dont have a leg or anything else to stand on... they like the rest of the world can get their news from the world service and if they want to listen to BBC radio 4 go for it...

a geo block is remarkably effective it also reduces the amount of infrastructure costs therefore allowing more resources for the UK license payer

Comment Telstra phone box's (Score 1) 56

Telstra get paid by the gov to maintain payphones under the USO

"Telstra has a Universal Service Obligation (USO) to ensure standard telephone services (STS) and payphones are reasonably accessible to all people in Australia on an equitable basis, wherever they work or live."

secondly they can put a cell site to broadcast the Telstra LTE signal

think for a moment how difficult it is to get real estate in the middle of towns or villages (they dont use them all like this but they do it where it makes sense)

BT could actually learn that lesson and start pulling fibre to the old phone box's and setting up a EE micro cell site...
