I could be wrong, but it looks like shashdot just accidentally got unicode working. What kind of "black magic" might'n this be? I was able to select text from a summary - and then as if by magic - paste it in and find it wasn't mangled into gibberish.

We'll see about that.

Besides, we don't need unicode. Everything works fine without it. Learn ASCII art if you want to post fancy smileys.

The need for unicode concerns copy & paste, not making emojis. I'll test it, before it didn't mangle unicode in preview, but when you hit the "submit" button is when it got mangled.
If the following isn't mangled, they fixed it:
The green fur on Tubarkâ(TM)s neck stood on end as her hairy, tentacled arm with its seven tentacled fingers pointed to the bright afternoon sky. âoeDo you see that?â she exclaimed. All four of her eyes stared at the sky as her hairy tail drooped and the feathers on

Yes, copying unicode still always gets mangled, we've all seen that, even in the summary. That wasn't indicated in the JE. I would like to know which one he is talking about.
By not having unicode Slashdot avoids a whole bunch of issues and a lot of unnecessary maintenance, keeps things simple and uses less space. A text forum does not need the eye candy any more than it needs javascript, css, or really anything beyond plain old html with regular old ASCII.

Does slashdot need unicode? I would argue yes, at least for the most basic characters. I don't give a shit if it can handle unicode for smiling poop or crying winking llama. I do believe it should be able to handle the characters that are created by keys on my 101 key keyboard, though.

That's a big assumption, right there. I haven't seen anyone identified (or willing to take the blame) as a programmer employed for slashdot for several years now.
