Journal damn_registrars's Journal: 97% in 2016 30

What was 97% in 2016? According to opensecrets.org, 97% of US House members who ran for re-election in 2016 won their re-election bid. While that seems high - and it is higher than 2014, 2012, or 2010 - it is not the highest we've seen since the 60's, and we've never seen less than 80% in that time frame.

This is of course while congress has approval ratings from US polls that is barely better than Ebola or ISIS.

  • Business as usual, republican, democrat, doesn't matter. Expect a really big shoe, as Ed Sullivan would say. If it ever goes below that 80%, I'll start believing that people are serious. Pay no attention to stupid media polls about "approval ratings"

    • Each person has only one representative in the US House. I voted against my said representative. I supported the campaign of the person running against that representative; I made phone calls and knocked on doors on the challenger's behalf. In the end that apparently just wasn't enough.

Maybe in 2018 I'll just have to run against that person myself. I wouldn't have been as nuanced as our candidate was; I would have called the incumbent out on their BS and stated directly what my aims would be in cong
      • The democrats didn't 'miss' any memo. They tore it up. They are just as corrupt as the republicans. It's Gotti vs. Gambino.

        • Is any political organization perfect from top to bottom? Certainly not. I experienced the group here at a level much more intimate than I had ever seen before. There may be corruption at levels above us, but on this level we reflect the values and beliefs of our voters.

Now, if it could all be done over again, it would likely be a better image of the American people to have (at least) 4 or 5 parties that split the electorate fairly evenly. Unfortunately we have to work with the system that exists, ra

Always with the lame bullshit hand waving. Damn, I wish I could remember the name for your particular example of absurdity there. You are being the useful and typical apologist. We made the system what it is today. If you keep on supporting/rewarding corrupt political parties, you should expect them to dominate. Until you divest yourself of them, expect nothing different.

            • ... and back to your usual bit of encouraging people not to vote. There are times I wish you were a little less predictable. If you really wanted to surprise me you would propose an actual solution. Discouraging voting does not help anything, we still end up electing politicians as long as there is at least one ballot cast.
              • And back to your usual lies. I always advocated voting for other candidates. But you want to play your blame game, so go right ahead. You are only illustrating why you lost the election and why you will continue to lose even more.

                • You say that as if you think you could support it with things you have actually said and done. Keep repeating it and maybe you'll push your own noise level above your signal so that others won't be able to tell the difference.

Meanwhile some of us will actually work on solving some of these problems.
                  • :-) Funny to think you know what I have done. And since I am endlessly curious about the mind of a crazy person, where did you ever see me advocate not voting, especially since you think I did it here? How do you conjure up such madness? This is utterly fascinating. I doubt you can or will answer, but I can't resist asking anyway. Maybe somebody else can explain the process.

You're not 'solving' any problems. You are perpetuating them by supporting corruption in politics.

                    • You have advocated not voting on multiple occasions. I'm not going to waste my time going through your comments to point out to you when you said it. If you want to claim that you no longer advocate not voting, you can say that - and I may try to hold you to it - but you definitely previously advocated not voting.

I have mentioned before that the total percentage of eligible voters in the US who actually bother to vote is almost always below 50% - it was around 44% this year - which of course means tha
                    • No, you said I did it right here in this JE. But of course you can't say where, because I didn't and never did before. So once again you evaded the question, and continue to lie. Very typical... The non-voters are our only hope for change. Their minds are probably more open to third parties. Why they don't try, I don't know. But they should. What is widely known is that you fanboys are mindless followers of the status quo, simple tribalism at play. Maybe that's why you feel you have to make up stories. They

                    • Their minds are probably more open to third parties. Why they don't try, I don't know.

Small correction: Maybe they don't try, because you people have convinced them a third party vote is a wasted voted. Essentially it is you that advocate that they don't vote. So here you are just engaging in projection of your own preferences.

                    • You guys are so horny for each other, it's sickening. Just thought you'd like me to chime in with that.

                    • Isn't it time to update your signature? You got your guy into the white house, you better celebrate it while you can.
                    • Hey! Good to see you back. Bet you're pleased as punch... So am I, but for a completely different reason. Gotta admit I'm surprisingly optimistic about the whole affair. Slowly getting rid of democrats, your republicans are next. Just gotta make sure to keep their cockroaches out this time.. 97% reelection still, but hope is endless. If we can wake up the non voters and convince them that it's up to them to make third parties a winning ticket, you never know... Of course the fanboys here on both sides have

                    • The more eloquent/customary version is, "Don't you two think you should get a room?"

                    • Yes, and Barbara's agenda is pretty evident from that JE. What's yours?

                    • Agenda? Really? Well whaddya know... Here I am thinking she was expressing an opinion that I also share... So, is she plotting something nefarious, or what? I don't really see what you're onto there. As for mine, isn't it perfectly clear in the post? From my end it does seem pretty explicit. If it seems harsh, oh well, that's the way the cookie crumbles. I'll leave the niceties to professionals.

                    • It remains to be seen how much of what my guy campaigned on will come to fruition. So I'm not celebrating yet. But at least we'll soon be rid of our Smirker-in-Chief.

                    • Considering the composition of his cabinet and staff, it certainly seems he plans to proceed full steam ahead on his message of hate. I expect they'll get the congressional GOP critters fully in line with him using the same tools they used to scare the democrats into submission under W's administration. I would be surprised if the senate doesn't use the nuclear option before July to put David Duke on the bench of the SCOTUS.
                    • Nothing you could say could tear me away from my guy, (my guy)...

Who's the "horny" one in the room?

The last 45 years never happened. Good morning Vietnam! This time we're gonna win!

But contrary to what he said above, the democrats weren't "scared" into anything. Like the little lapdogs they are they tag along quite willingly while yapping about it. I am overwhelmed by déjà vu. The old meme of "rinse/repeat" couldn't be more applicable.

                    • scare the democrats into submission

What a load! If that were true, tell us again why anybody in their right minds should vote for such wimps.

                    • I want to see an all-Klan court. Exchange the dark robes for white ones.

                    • Considering how little concern they show for the law and the constitution, it probably isn't fully outside the realm of possibility.
                    • Suck it up, buttercup [washingtonpost.com]. Your party brought this on.

                    • Someone should tell Trump the Mexicans can wait; we need to first round up all you Lefties and deport you. With all the jobs and housing and room on the freeways freed up from that, I might even be for amnesty for the beaners then.

      • Independents have been elected to both houses. The more independents, the more likely that they will be the deciding factor in tight votes. Doesn't have to be with a party to win - it just means you have to work harder and present a better case for yourself.
        • Indeed independents have been elected. It can be done, but unless you are a millionaire who wants to run as an independent, it is a pretty quixotic mission - especially if there is an incumbent in the seat you aspire to and they are running for re-election. As I've said (multiple times in this JE discussion), there are more than enough eligible voters out there who are not bothering to vote to be able to unseat any politician almost anywhere, but getting them motivated to vote is no minor feat. Over half
          • You discourage voting when you say that third party (independent) voting is a wasted effort. It is you that advocates not voting with your 'lesser evil' bullshit, not me.

          • I've been pushing/voting for independents/third party for a long time, but he lies when he says I don't vote and advocate the same. Our host here is definitely a democrat fanboy. And he still won't acknowledge that the democrats gave the election to Trump by putting up one of their regular machine candidate instead of what the people actually wanted. The fraud was spelled out in black and white. With this and the 'lesser evil' propaganda that he pushes, it's no wonder why people stay home.
