Journal damn_registrars's Journal: Counting how the new layout sucks 19

I am not even close to being the first person to complain about this abysmal new layout in their journal. A quick list of entries I have already seen:

So here I will start building a list of reasons why the new user page layout sucks:

  • Annoying idle.slashdot.org color scheme
  • Right-side fields overlap message information
  • No link from your user page to your messages page
  • No easy way to view all of your journal entries (or even their titles as before)

I know there are more reasons to hate it, but these came to mind quickly. I can also say I have seen several OS/Browser combinations that all have those problems with the new setup:

  • Windows 2000 / Firefox 3
  • Windows XP Pro / Firefox 3
  • FreeBSD 6 / Konqueror
  • FreeBSD 6 / Firefox 3

For that matter, has anyone found a combination that actually will actually render correctly? I'm guessing we'll have to use a Mac in OS X with Safari, since this could probably be the fault of Pudge, I mean Pudge.

Counting how the new layout sucks

  • After posting this, I went back to the slashdot main page [slashdot.org] and there was the link for the beta index page [slashdot.org], which is also terrible. I particularly enjoy that the link introduces that page by asking

I think it really ought to say

    Feeling masochistic?

Oh, and if I haven't mentioned it before, the new firehose [slahdot.org] also sucks tremendously. I particular, it is much more difficult to get the firehose to display particular data. Say for example you want to see new journal entries; you have to

    • wait for the firehose to load entirely (whic

I pointed this out a while back in another discussion, but if you manage to get the firehose to let you name the tab (who knows, it might work right in the new layout, I'm not fucking touching mine ever again after my last attempt to add a tab deleted my old ones and required an hour to figure out that I'd have to switch back and forth between browsers to get them back again) you can get straight to the appropriate content with firehose.pl?tab=tabname

It suddenly stopped saving the color setting though, so y

    • Now I get to kill the unresponsive script more times than before! I used to only see it occasionally on the front page, now I see it on the firehose, and sometimes on my own page as well! And I can all but count on seeing it with every single load of the front page!

Thanks Pudge [slashdot.org], I mean Pudge [slashdot.org], we all love you so very much!

I just wish I was cool enough to be allowed to write in your journal so I could also kiss your feet! [wordpress.com]

  • I have found two working pairs of OS/Browser that actually do render correctly:
    • OS-X(PPC)/Firefox 3
    • OS-X(PPC)/Safari

Apparently the rest of the world just isn't important for the new slashdot layout.

  • As someone who HATES it. I fear that slashdot staff has started smoking crack, or worse - - smoking web2.0 hype.

Please give me my old slashdot back!

    • Take a number, friend. I imagine Taco's mailbox must be overflowing with rants right now... Though I probably should send one as well just in case other's haven't taken the initiative.

I would try contacting a slashdot programmer directly but I suspect if I sent an email to Pudge [slashdot.org] that said message would just go straight to /dev/null.
  • The analysis indicates that the author of http://slashdot.org/~RailGunner/journal/217023 [slashdot.org] is of the type:
    ESTJ - The Guardians
The organizing and efficient type. They are especially attuned to setting goals and managing available resources to get the job done. Once theyve made up their mind on something, it can be quite difficult to convince otherwise. They listen to hard facts and can have a hard time accepting new or innovative ways of doing things.

The Guardians are often happy working in highly structured w

    • Can you provide a link to that?

Though the difference between an ISTJ and an ESTJ is just the Introvert/Extrovert characteristic. An ISTJ with a bad attitude could easily be mistaken for an ESTJ when angry.

Take a look at any of the Pudge journal entries where he declares someone as a foe (which happens fairly often) and you'll see his ESTJ side.
  • I just noticed that if a slashdot user page [slashdot.org] has links in the most recent comments [slashdot.org], they are rendered in the same color as the background, giving us links we cannot read [xinhuanet.com].

Thanks a lot, Pudge [slashdot.org] Pudge, I mean Pudge [slashdot.org] Pudge.
