There's quite a lot of nuance here, I guess, which isn't unexpected. It's quite a useful anecdote. At the very least, we can't just wave it away like it's not useful. It may generate sub-standard paintings or completely miss the point of art, but if it makes your proofs better, it seems insane to not have it help.

I said Darth Cheeto's executive orders were less rooted in law than what's come before and you think I support him? WTF? I said your statement supported the position you were replying to. That's not support, that's telling you you're supporting something almost, though not quite, as bad.

For the rest, I am pro-immigration (even asylum) but anti-unlawful immigration. I don't hold against people that they want better lives and will use any excuse to obtain them, but I do hold against people when they are responsible for upholding the law and not only fail to do so but subvert it (and then claim that they had nothing to do with creating the crisis). Yes, I hold that against both parties equally, and yes, that applies to where we are in terms of the economy, Iran, etc. I am not being partisan here.

Well, wait, I don't think that actually disproves the claim. I'm not saying it's not impressive, I just don't think it's as novel as you say.

When I ask an LLM to write me code that does something 'novel', it usually does quite a good job. I'm just using the freely available models, but they quite competently write code that is not truly derivative of any other code. If I give them some code of my own that has a bug in it, they'll find the bug and patch it, and that bug is, for all intents and purposes, unique.

You're still seeing a bunch of old patterns rehashed--I presume that other proofs introduce infinity families, and they can iterate through inside a clear logical structure to test whether or not something works. Again, this is impressive work, but I'm not personally convinced that this is 'novel' in terms of the broader corpus of mathematical knowledge. It didn't invent a new field of mathematics to solve your problem.

Even if you didn't prompt it, take a look sometimes at the contemplations of the models, if that's available to you. Before the model even arrives in your hands, it's got stacks of prompts giving it meta instructions, and it then generates prompts for itself to check your work. I think it would be interesting if you ran your experiment again on a new account that's fresh and see if you can watch the chain of reasoning. You might be right, it MAY be doing something TRULY novel, but as I've said, I've got my doubts.

Obviously, you're a mathematician and I'm not; I can't tell you that you're wrong about it if you insist that it is doing something new.

the reason DACA was done via EO was that Republicans refused to pass the DREAM Act which was a bi-partisan bill kicked around since 2001 but Republicans would filibuster it at every oppurtunity.[sic]

"We couldn't get a law through congress so we did something questionably legal via executive order" is reinforcing the point being made by the grandparent (which, FWIW, I don't fully agree with. Many of Trump's executive orders are clearly less rooted in law than what's come before).

Same with the McCain Kennedy bill, bipartisan legislation never got a vote in the Senate

By the way, funny that you mention Sen. Kennedy in the context of immigration reform, who rather famously said: "This amnesty will give citizenship to only 1.3 million illegal aliens. We will secure the borders henceforth. We will never again bring forth an amnesty bill like this." Yet here we are.

JPEG-XL is a good format but I just realized yesterday that Google Docs on Android doesn't support inserting a webp image a decade after Google was pushing it. I had one from a website and needed to run it through imagemagick first.

Android supports it, all the apps using android image primitives supoort it, but one of Google's flagship apps still doesn't.

We used move much faster thirty years ago. If an app supported say GIF, PNM, and TGA when JPEG came out it was supported in the next release.

Hopefully this round will be better. It's probably a management problem ... maybe they will listen to their chatbot since they don't listen to their engineers.

Same experience for me. I remember a slow day in the office back in 99 or 2000 (we'd just shipped a release) we got into an argument about typing speeds so set up typing tests for the whole team. My "my fingers never actually sit on the home keys, my hands relocate from time to time, and most of my typing is with three or four fingers and a thumb" ass clocked over 100wpm to the incredulity of the rest of the team.

Natural keyboards feel decidedly unnatural to me, because my hands always want to be somewhere they don't fit.

Have you met young people that intentionally became Windows admins?

I have. Generally fall into two buckets: the ones that did everything themselves and learned, or the ones that only have a school education. The former generally know what they're talking about, the latter often have huge gaps in their knowledge. But that's true of the devs I interview, too, so I wouldn't place that stigma on the windows admins.

Or the windows admins (the legitimate ones) you can hire out of, say, India? My guess is with your history, you probably have not.

"Met" as in face to face? No, not really, but I've been on a lot of phone calls with the men who do the needful. Again, this ain't a windows thing.

That being said, producing simplified proofs-of-concept could be accomplished with this toolset. Designers/teams with actual talent could produce something better with non-AI assets.
