Comment Why Stop With AI (Score 1) 79

We mustn't stop with AI. We need to be very concerned that some humans might memorize 42% of a copyrighted work well enough to reproduce 50-token excerpts at least half the time, and we may need to take measures to prevent this from happening, or at least make sure those humans aren't allowed to interact with other people online. We don't need another Fahrenheit 451 situation on our hands.

quora is only site I've found so consistently useless which constantly showed up at the top of google search results that I've gone to the trouble to explicitly put "-site:quora.com" in my google searches. I welcome anything which hastens its demise, even if it is our new AI overlords.

Comment Relatively Closed Ecosystem (Score 5, Interesting) 35

I have found at international conferences, this is an exaggeration of course, but it seems like everyone speaks English but the Japanese. A lot of time the people presenting a paper are not the original researchers because they speak no English and aren't at the conference, and the researchers almost exclusively reference other Japanese research. To me it's impressive how much they are able to do with such a relatively closed ecosystem.

It's inevitable that as multinational corporations descend purity spirals of virtue signalling they're going to run into the dubious claims endemic to geopolitical posturing. Show us that the Internet still recognizes censorship as damage and routes around it.

Most of the censorship on the internet is done by those companies, so routing around it means not using them, but they are pretty close to monopolies in the Anglosphere at least.

That's a problem for countries like Russia if information countervailing the official NATO or EU narratives against Russia (or Putin) is censored, because that essentially makes those platforms information warfare weapons.

When I think of the best place to find brilliant, free-thinking and even non-conformist tech geeks, of course the first place to come to my mind is Georgetown University, walking distance from the DC lobbyists and politicians and the Pentagon and a short 15 minute drive from CIA headquarters.
