I second this I switched to a Brother MPC 9800 series colour laser 10 years ago and its still running cartridges are cheap and get up to 3500 pages per cartridge still connects to everything iPads iPhone's Mac Windows, Linux, even their friends with android devices find it easy to connect to. I keep a spare set of cartridges for when those assignments are due and duplexing minimises paper It might go months without printing and then like a month ago printed 2000+ sheets for something the older student needed. The cost today of a similar one is half what I paid and what it would cost to replace ink cartridges 3 times in and epson or other inkjet.

Much of manufacturing is automated unless the human is cheap enough not to automate that being said I believe the Mac Pro factory in the USA has hardly any humans but it is the supply side that has problem USA manufacturing is hollowed out and critical parts need to be imported. In Apples case simple screws or lack thereof caused a problem https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffinance.yahoo.com%2Fnews.... Musk has a similar problem that he tackles by vertical integration for instance when he found he couldn't get a toolmaker He bought one brought it up to scratch and then used them to make the Die etc for manufacturing In apple case they would need to buy a screw manufacturer and restart that part of US manufacturing. That is what Trump is trying to get US companies to do instead of piling money up in the bank increase manufacturing capacity at home which benefits everyone BTW in Musks case that toolmaker started placing orders with other toolmakers when they had too much the end result they have restarted that very important part of manufacturing https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftrendsnewsline.com%2F202...

From the article

Elon Musk’s acquisition of Riviera Tool & Die is a significant step in reshaping the American manufacturing landscape. By focusing on domestic production, Musk not only enhances the quality and resilience of his supply chain but also supports local economies and inspires a shift toward innovation in manufacturing. As industries continue to evolve, Musk’s approach may serve as a blueprint for future entrepreneurs looking to balance quality, sustainability, and local economic support. The implications of this acquisition extend beyond Musk’s own ventures, potentially influencing the broader trajectory of American manufacturing in the years to come.

Slashdot normally should have a few stories about it considering it relies on Data AI and IT systems which are vastly out of date and technology dinosaurs being upgraded and fixed (A process ironically started under Obama). Much of what they are doing is fixing the work literally being done by what would be Slashdot core audience. However Slashdot only has 2 articles if you search for DOGE. Why has this been ignored by Slashdot? are there any Slashdot readers involved.
DOGE also take submission on waste so an interesting site is https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatarepublican.com%2F which has developed search tools to find connections with politicians money flows and their friends business associates and relatives. This site alone should be a slashdot story. It's still a work in progress but the results so far are eye opening.

In the case of the protests they were funded by NGO's connected to various people who stood to lose if their NGO lost government funding. BTW NGO = Non Government Organisation yet most are highly government funded i.e. if the Government stops funding the organisation dies therefore not really an NGO but used to obfuscate the money trail as they don't have the same reporting as Government entities

The industry has already realized that fraud that is self-driving and they understand the catastrophe that Tesla has brought to human factors,

I been driving a long time It was fun when I was young less traffic country roads were open and only wildlife was a danger. Now the roads are clogged and the idiots who got their licence yesterday or lost their licence are everywhere. As much as I like driving going fast it's no longer practical or safe and the sheer number of things going on outside the car means any distractions in the car are just adding to the problem. Driving has lost its joy on the road. On the track though is different but even there its losing its appeal. Like Everest being Edmond Hillary and the first few is new exciting and ground breaking. now doing it is just one of the masses and the person with the most money gets the best results not the most clever, talented, or skilled

Self Driving cars are going to be a necessity for multiple reasons those that can't drive and shouldn't I see many older people lose there freedom when their eyes and bodies fail for safe driving. Many young people should lose their license for the dumb things they do and others don't drive enough to keep up the skills and when they do well we use to call them "Sunday Drivers".

Admittedly Self driving is not perfect yet but it has come a long way Tesla FWIW gives you the option to try FSD(supervised) on a monthly fee or in a test drive as they do accept that much of new car features are software that can be installed and upgraded. No I don't own a Tesla but have been researching new car options for the wife and it looks to be a good option for her

Submission + - Meta Argues Enshittification Isn't Real (arstechnica.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Meta thinks there's no reason to carry on with its defense after the Federal Trade Commission closed its monopoly case, and the company has moved to end the trial early by claiming that the FTC utterly failed to prove its case. "The FTC has no proof that Meta has monopoly power," Meta's motion for judgment (PDF) filed Thursday said, "and therefore the court should rule in favor of Meta." According to Meta, the FTC failed to show evidence that "the overall quality of Meta’s apps has declined" or that the company shows too many ads to users. Meta says that's "fatal" to the FTC's case that the company wielded monopoly power to pursue more ad revenue while degrading user experience over time (an Internet trend known as "enshittification"). And on top of allegedly showing no evidence of "ad load, privacy, integrity, and features" degradation on Meta apps, Meta argued there's no precedent for an antitrust claim rooted in this alleged harm.

"Meta knows of no case finding monopoly power based solely on a claimed degradation in product quality, and the FTC has cited none," Meta argued. Meta has maintained throughout the trial that its users actually like seeing ads. In the company's recent motion, Meta argued that the FTC provided no insights into what "the right number of ads" should be, "let alone" provide proof that "Meta showed more ads" than it would in a competitive market where users could easily switch services if ad load became overwhelming. Further, Meta argued that the FTC did not show evidence that users sharing friends-and-family content were shown more ads. Meta noted that it "does not profit by showing more ads to users who do not click on them," so it only shows more ads to users who click ads.

Meta also insisted that there's "nothing but speculation" showing that Instagram or WhatsApp would have been better off or grown into rivals had Meta not acquired them. The company claimed that without Meta's resources, Instagram may have died off. Meta noted that Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom testified that his app was “pretty broken and duct-taped” together, making it "vulnerable to spam" before Meta bought it. Rather than enshittification, what Meta did to Instagram could be considered "a consumer-welfare bonanza," Meta argued, while dismissing "smoking gun" emails from Mark Zuckerberg discussing buying Instagram to bury it as "legally irrelevant." Dismissing these as "a few dated emails," Meta argued that "efforts to litigate Mr. Zuckerberg’s state of mind before the acquisition in 2012 are pointless."

"What matters is what Meta did," Meta argued, which was pump Instagram with resources that allowed it "to 'thrive'—adding many new features, attracting hundreds of millions and then billions of users, and monetizing with great success." In the case of WhatsApp, Meta argued that nobody thinks WhatsApp had any intention to pivot to social media when the founders testified that their goal was to never add social features, preferring to offer a simple, clean messaging app. And Meta disputed any claim that it feared Google might buy WhatsApp as the basis for creating a Facebook rival, arguing that "the sole Meta witness to (supposedly) learn of Google’s acquisition efforts testified that he did not have that worry."
