It's a decent idea for this reason: some of the Roku original stuff is good, but you can only watch it on Roku channel with ads. One example is the Weird Al movie. When that came out it was exclusive to Roku and the only option was to watch it with ads. I'd pay 2.99 to watch it without ads. Like the previous commenter said however, they will screw it up in a few months by getting greedy and adding more content as an excuse to go up on the price.

... but the get-off-my-lawn slashdot crowd has a terrible track record of predicting the success of a new technology. I was here when they said the iPhone wouldn't work (holding up to your face will mess with the touchscreen, it won't work without a stylus, just get a PDA, etc). Then they made fun of the iPad (lol apple named their device after a tampon, that will go over well). Then they said bitcoin would never be worth anything and miners were wasting their time and resources (use your extra cpu cycles for folding@home instead). AI is here to stay whether you like it or not and it will only get better.

This. I've been saying for years that it would make the most sense to make all public internet addresses IPv6 and corporate LANs can still run on IPv4 if they want to. Translation can be done at the router. One major hurdle to IPv6 adoption is the fact that there are still a ton of popular websites that don't support IPv6.

I assume by "unrestrained and unchecked" you're referring to how the left has put so many regulations, restrictions, and minimum wage increases in place over the decades that it made companies first offshore and then (when that still wasn't enough) invent AI for the purpose of being able to stay in business.

"There was no law requiring you submit your ID to some database (to probably get hacked) to sign up for HBO, Cinemax, or Showtime." You had to be an adult to have the prerequisite cable or satellite service. Those companies didn't sign up minors for those services. And the worst that could happen with HBO, Cinemax etc is that a kid might hear some swear words or see some boobs. There's much worse you can get into on the net these days.

Laws existed to protect children from harmful things long before the internet existed. You don't get to bypass those laws just because the bad things are online. And you also don't get to bypass those laws because "muh privacy." Sorry, not sorry. If you don't like that then don't use the service. The laws should have been expanded to require age verification decades ago.
