Journal tomhudson's Journal: New Years Resolutions HOW-TO 11

It's that time of year - new years, and with it, new years resolutions.

So:

  1. Bite-sized chunks: For example, don't say you're going to lose 50 pounds in 50 weeks, but set a more manageable goal - 10 pounds by April 1st. You can always go for another 10 pounds once you've reached your goal;
  2. Be specific: Not "I will spend more time with the kids", but "Sunday brunch with the kids, every weekend";
  3. Keep notes: Writing your goals down and tacking them to the fridge makes it easy to give up - "oops, the magnet let them slip." Write your goals down in a notebook, and every day, write down your successes and failures - what worked and didn't work - and why;
  4. Persist: Everyone has setbacks. Why should you be different? That's why you keep notes - to remind yourself of the victories, as well as the losses, and to help you keep track of what you need to change.
  5. Strategize: Spend time thinking about HOW you're going to achieve your goal, rather than focusing only on the goal.

For example, most people are going to resolve to lose some weight.

Resolving to lose a couple of pounds every month breaks it into a "bite-sized chunk" - on that you can keep track of in your notebook. Its also a specific goal, as opposed to "I am going to lose weight." Your strategy might be to eat smaller portions, no second helpings, and switching to diet soft drinks. All of these strategies are reasonable, and easy to keep track of.

If your resolution is to be nicer to people, don't just think it - go through your cell-phone's address book and figure out one thing you can do for each person in it - something that is all about them, not you and them.

If your resolution is to fix your finances, start by writing down what you spend ... every penny ... and review it daily to see just where the money is going now. Then, every so often, take something off that list, and put the money towards paying the bills quicker. Or over-pay one specific bill (online banking is good for this) by one-third. If you do this with your cell phone and cable connections, it will be sort of like getting the 4th month free - put that 4th month aside for a rainy day, or use it to make a larger payment on some outstanding debt.

New Years Resolutions HOW-TO

  • Good advice. I'm still unsure of what I want to do...
    • So just take a piece of paper and start writing down ideas - good, bad, and ugly. Or talk to people around you. Its not like they have to be made by the stroke of midnight :-) and its also a great conversation topic. For example: "I won't let anyone I know drive drunk." is very apropos on new years' eve.

      Or ask people what their resolutions are, and why ...

      Good luck!

  • Now please, quit discussing the weight loss thing. I've been doing well on my "resolution" for the last few months, meeting and exceeding my goals every week, and now I'm going to have to deal with my biggest hurdle so far: an extremely crowded gym for the next 2-3 months.
    • Its kind of inevitable, unfortunately. The all-time top three every year are saving money, losing weight, and quiting smoking ...

      You've been doing good, so maybe you can "mentor" one of the new flabbie-babies. It'll help you keep on track, and if the place is too crowded you can give them a hard workout, then swipe the machine while they're puking their guts out after 5 minutes ... :-)

  • you could pick resolutions that you know are inevitable anyways. Like resolving to GAIN weight rather than lose it ;-)
    • One of my resolutions is to drink a bit of wine once in a while, since there are health benefits. I've tried before, and its not so easy to make it into a daily habit. Same with TV - I've now got almost 700 channels, and I watch maybe 1 show a week ...

      Speaking of TV ... I've looked at the latest crop of TVs and I'm kind of underwhelmed ... they just don't deliver what I was expecting. Maybe the SEDs that are supposed to come out this summer will be better ... or maybe I'll just settle for something "for

        What a coincidence! One of my resolutions is to drink a lot of scotch every night.

  • I resolve not to make any New Year's resolutions for 2007.

    Darn- I blew it already.

      Due to my high rate of failures with my resolutions I made the same promise at the start of 06. Of course I worded it, "I will never make another New Year's resolution." 'Another' implying after that one of course. So jest as you may, I am on a one year winning streak and counting for keeping my resolution.
  • Making promises to myself around 1 January that I break before June - I find that my early childhood conditioning works better, start the Tuesday after (US) Labor Day just like school did from age 5 through 17 - the new calendar year is well and good for some folks, but I figure each new day begins a new year - why load all the pressure onto a day already stuffed with Bowl games?
  • I did with weight loss [slashdot.org]. Ok, I'm an aberration but it is still possible.

Marriage is the sole cause of divorce.
