Submission + - Crypto Ransomware Attacks Jump 500% in Last Year

Trailrunner7 writes: There appears to be no end in sight to the ransomware epidemic. New stats released by security researchers at Kaspersky Lab show that the number of users who came across crypto ransomware in the last year increased by more than 500 percent over the previous year.

Data compiled by Kaspersky researchers from the company’s cloud network shows that from April 2015 to March 2016, the volume of crypto ransomware encountered by users leapt from 131,111 to 718,536. That’s a massive increase, especially considering the fact that ransomware is a somewhat mature threat. It didn’t just burst onto the scene a couple of years ago. Kaspersky’s researchers said the spike in crypto ransomware can be attributed to a small group of variants.

Submission + - Wendelstein 7-X Fusion Reactor Produces its First Flash of Hydrogen Plasma (gizmag.com)

Zothecula writes: Experimentation with Germany's newest fusion reactor is beginning to heat up, to temperatures of around 80 million degrees Celsius, to be precise. Having fired up the Wendelstein 7-X to produce helium plasma late last year, researchers have built on their early success to generate its first hydrogen plasma, an event they say begins the true scientific operation of the world's largest fusion stellarator.

Submission + - Have your iPhone 6 repaired, only to get it bricked by Apple (theguardian.com) 1

Nemosoft Unv. writes: In case you had a problem with the fingerprint sensor or some other small defect on your iPhone 6 and had it repaired by a non-official (read: cheaper) shop, you may be in for a nasty surprise: error 53.

What happens is that during an OS update or re-install the software checks the internal hardware and if it detects a non-Apple component, it will display an error 53 and brick your phone. Any photos or other data held on the handset is lost – and irretrievable.
Thousands of people have flocked to forums to express their dismay at this. What's more insiduous is that the error may only appear weeks or months after the repair.

Increduously, Apple says this cannot be fixed by any hard- or software update, while it is clearly their software that causes the problem in the first place.

And then you thought FTDI was being nasty...

Generally, no.

If it was *sexual* violence against white *men* (as the people who signed the petition believed: "incentive is to commit sexual violence against women, then abuse or kill them to proceed or get 'health' points") then I challenge that it would indeed be a problem.

A lot of male gamers would likely be turned off playing a game where a character that looks like them is the subject of sexual violence.

Since the current national average gas price is $3.675, an increase of $2.515, it would seem only fair that instead of a gas tax increase, they should propose a tax credit of $2.331/gallon ($2.515, less the 1993 tax rate of $0.184).

Just sayin...

On February 5, 2014, Slashdot announced through a javascript popup that they are starting to "move in to" the new Slashdot Beta design.

Slashdot Beta is a trend-following attempt to give Slashdot a fresh look, an approach that has led to less space for text and an abandonment of the traditional Slashdot look. Much worse than that, Slashdot Beta fundamentally breaks the classic Slashdot discussion and moderation system.

If you haven't seen Slashdot Beta already, open this [slashdot.org] in a new tab. After seeing that, click here [slashdot.org] to return to classic Slashdot.

We should boycott stories and only discuss the abomination that is Slashdot Beta until Dice abandons the project.
We should boycott slashdot entirely during the week of Feb 10 to Feb 17 as part of the wider slashcott [slashdot.org]

Moderators - only spend mod points on comments that discuss Beta
Commentors - only discuss Beta

Keep this up for a few days and we may finally get the PHBs attention.
