Journal nizo's Journal: Behold! For I am the master of my underwear drawer 14

I am the master of my underwear drawer. Socks go in there too. And other random little things that I don't want to lose (like my checkbook for example). Nothing ever gets folded, and there is no reason to pair the socks, since they are all the same. My drawer has survived one marriage and who knows how many relationships; it is indeed the last bastion of my bachelorhood, and the ultimate incarnation of my lazy disorganization.

Sam's recent lamenting about not being a master of anything got me thinking; aside from my mastery of my underwear drawer, what am I good at? Aside from ending sentences with prepositions, I am good with computers (hardware, linux, some web stuff, etc). I don't really feel like a master, though I know enough to know where to look to get anything done that I need to (augggh not again). I have probably forgotten more computer stuff than most people will ever know (or need to know). I write well, and I am pretty good at problem solving; I often think of solutions that no one else does (which can be good or bad depending on how dumb my solution is :-) )

As for Sam, keep in mind I envy you the following:

- a degree in English; if I had any degree I would be happy, but an English degree means I would probably go be an editor or something (and probably hate it even worse than what I do now, but that is another topic). Regardless, don't discount what it took to get a damn degree.
- the ability to play an instrument well.

I am sure there is more, but I have already spent too much time on this journal entry already :-D

So to carry on the theme, what do you do well?

the ability to play an instrument well.

As someone once said, "If you can't learn to do it well, learn to enjoy doing it badly." Sage advice, that.

that is indeed good advice... something i've always lived by. when i started playing guitar when i was 16, i didn't give a damn. i knew i didn't know what i was doing, but that thing sure made the coolest noise and that's all that mattered to me. but then something strange happened... nearly 20 years later, i went and got pretty good at the damn thing.

I think that describes my art right now... :-) Though if I keep practicing, maybe I will get good at it, but damn it is still fun to draw stuff.
  • But that is the best JE title I've seen in a long time :D

Hehe. Sadly it is about all I am really master of... :-|
      • If it makes you feel better I'm the same way, except I don't really have my own drawers anymore. Little baby clothes have taken over.

I am amazingly not bad at pretty much everything (except for anything musical and Calculus where I am just really bad). I'm vaguely competent in many things as well.

There is one thing I might potentially be extremely good at, but it's one of those skill sets that only my husband enjoys so I don't kow if that counts ;) He'll vouch for me though...

  • i'm pretty flipping good at that. i'm a great reader. not out loud or anything, but i can read like nobodys business. i retain stuff pretty well too if i enjoy what i'm reading.

my kids seem pleased with me as a dad, but they don't have anything to compare it to, so who knows.

i'm really good at annoying my wife. often i don't even have to try and yet i succeed.

oh- when i'm sweating a lot, then i sit down, and the sweat is dripping off my nose to the ground. i'm pretty good at gett
  • and the underwear gnomes have been notified of the location of your underwear drawer ...

Seriously, though, I've been doing this Changing The World thing since I was 14, first with a TV show on alternative energy choices, then with the whole recycled paper thing for magazines, then printing government papers and bills on two sides of the page, then ramping up recycled paper usage in government purchases and contracts to 5, 10, 15, 20 percent (some idealists wanted to go from 0 to 25 percent, but there were n

  • croquet.

Crazy good at it. Actually, I am good at lawn sports in general, but I am a master at croquet.
  • Put me on a Spruance class Destroyer. Give me a can of soda, a clip board, and about 30 seconds head-start, and there's no way you'll find me for the rest of the day. ;)

Having said that, I believe the last of the Spruance class ships was decommissioned just recently. :(

I guess that means I'm not good at anything any more. <sniffle>
  • It may not be the most important contribution to the planet, but I do time keeping well [slashdot.org]

I wrote my own program. Every six minutes, it pops up and asks me where the time went - the results are auto-added to my calendar. I wrote a script to pull the current accounting codes out of the database using an ODBC interface. I wrote a VBScript applet to export the calendar to a .csv file. I wrote programs to crunch that data into a timesheet (including overtime calcs) AND a project time billing system. (When that p
