The real problem is that given his rank, he would be in a position to hear things sooner than others further down the food chain. Anyone paying attention to who is doing any betting could have (or should have) asked what they might now that would cause them to place the bet they did. In this case, it boils down to an OPSEC violation, and that's illegal under any circumstance, punishable by UCMJ if not actual civilian law. The fact that the FBI are involved tells me that this guy will probably be facing UCMJ violations too (if he's lucky, court martial if he's not), and may not be a Sergeant Major any longer when the dust settles.

Curious, then, that if such a law was already passed that recently that the likes of Pelosi (and surely other members of both parties) still managed to get around it.
Congress (as a whole) acts as if their shit doesn't stink. It's high time they get reminded that it most certainly does.

Worked at a company for 15 years. Company was bought and sold a couple times. Most recent owner decided my position (and that of several others) was to be eliminated. Such is life in the world of Mergers and Acquisitions.

Now I'm looking for another job. The tools at my disposal are better, the resources are better, and the personal networks I have built over the years is better. Hopefully I'll be back to work soon.

Comment The real reasons viewership has dropped (Score 1) 152

I can think of four reasons ticket sales have dropped.
  1. Much of what Hollywood has been putting out is crap.
  2. Politicians increase taxes constantly, resulting in less disposable income for potential movie-goers.
  3. Ticket costs increasing - Not much can be done there, theaters do it to compensate for the loss in sales.
  4. Streaming is a thing. Why go to a theater to sit in a sticky, uncomfortable seat when one can wait a little while for the movie to hit $STREAMING_SERVICE and watch it from the comfort of one's own home?

Well, as of the end of last month, I no longer live in New England. I'm still in the same time zone.

Myself, I am fortunate enough to be able to work from home, so that is not a problem. I know several of my friends in Meat Space aren't quite as fortunate. :(

Well, if I'm not allowed to repair my machine on my own (if I'm so inclined), then I guess I don't have to worry about paying to have the broken product taken to the dump. I can just drop it on the sidewalk of these "authorised repair" facilities and get something else. They want to control the stupid thing that badly, they can take care of its disposal.

The other alternative is to jerry-rig a fix anyway. If they don't like it, too damned bad.

I started off 2018 by finally getting my Amateur Radio license. I went in with nothing and came out with General class.

I finished the year by going for Amateur Extra, and I passed. I was a little surprised, but it took a lot of work to learn what I needed to know for the exam.

Enact VoterID.

We already need identification for all sorts of things in society: buying alcohol, tobacco, registering a car, getting a job... Proving who you are to vote is not difficult at all.

In a growing number of states, Real ID standards are mandated. Without a RealID-compliant license, for example, one cannot do something as routine as getting through airport security.

For certain political parties to claim it is "racist" to require ID to vote because certain minorities cannot get an ID is, in itself, racist.

The problems VoterID would solve would far surpass the crap ideas floated by the Democrats in the Senate.

The only major problem there is I'm deathly afraid of heights. :( (Seriously, it's so bad that I start to have panic attacks in video games. You should watch me play Minecraft sometime. It's hysterical.)

I'm looking at different ideas for doing a vertical that I might be able to do from the house, or maybe a horizontal from the house to a tree that's on the property.

Take that however you wish.

I was given a Yaesu FT-450D as an early birthday/Christmas gift. (My dad and step mom can be cool that way, though I do admit that this was a bit much.)

That means I have to figure out a scheme for an antenna that works for my property, that I can get put into place with a minimum of hassle. I have just shy of a half acre, but it's the layout of the buldings, trees, and a buried (but filled-in) septic tank I have to deal with.

I've requested a "vanity call" for several reasons. I want to see if i can get my great-uncle's call, as a nod to him. If I can't have that, I have a few others in mind that are a bit easier to deal with as I learn CW.
