Comment Re:BUILD CARS! (Score 1) 118

You make the same mistake that the idiot CEO at Ford makes, that ADVERTISING isn't worth it. You know how you see all these Hyundai and Kia vehicles on the roads these days...that's advertising, even if per-vehicle the profits may not be great, they have a lot of vehicles on the roads, and that makes people more inclined to buy them. For all the Ford CARS that are not being sold, that's just giving that name recognition to other companies.

Ford still makes all those normal cars, they just don't sell them here in North America, so the R&D, for what it's worth, is still being spent. If Ford makes even $10 profit on a normal car, that's continual advertising for the Ford name that they won't be generating. These days, Ford vehicles are seen as yet more, "stupid slow bastards sitting in the fast lane doing 55 miles per hour in a 65 zone", and that makes people dislike the brand. Dodge is the worst for slow pickups in the fast lane, then GM/Chevy, and Ford is catching up to just being a name people link with inconsiderate drivers.

The real issue is the compromises that too many companies make. Sure, you get the power, but then you can't even go 400 miles on a full charge for example...that's a compromise, the distance on a full charge being lower. Or, less cargo room because the battery takes up too much space, or less powerful, or whatever. People just don't want compromises just to have the new stuff.

That would generate our own power, at least during the day.

Solar certainly has a place, but distributed solar creates its own grid issues and I doubt could, in the near term, solve issues with demand constraints or grid constraints. I looked into solar but the ROI simply was not there for my use case.

The challenge is a lot of facilities, such as data centers want a lot of power that is basically uninterruptible, and build them in places where the infrastructure to get the power to them doesn't exist. So you have 2 NIMBY problems, building a plant and running lines to the site.

Utility planning also didn't take into account the explosion of demand due to data centers, mainly because it is a relatively new phenomena. They are also rightly concerned if the what's driving the demand for data centers goes awaay and demand drops as data centers close, whose footing the bill for the now not needed lines and power plants?

So, you want chip makers to put locators in their products with a kill switch that MIGHT be tripped if they lose GPS signals for too long? There isn't a lot of effort going into researching DEI, but people who are "not white" are clearly getting discriminated against by the Trump administration, so yea, they would rather go somewhere their work will be appreciated, rather than being treated as if they are less skilled or able to do things just because of their sex, gender, or whatever. Picking people just because they are white and look good on camera is just as much DEI as anything else, because they are picked for their race, even when grossly incompetent.

When conservatives, or pseudo-conservatives are continually against education, and research because "they don't like government spending", this is what happens. I understand being against corruption and poor uses of money, but because the majority of people are NOT educated with a focus in science, these people who are against investing in science cause countries to fall behind. You even see it with what has been going on with the space programs from different countries, the ones where conservatives have shut down most of the budget for space programs are the ones who keep falling behind in space. R&D for advanced physics research is the same thing, these conservatives keep looking for an immediate return on the investments, when it is really the applications of what government research comes up with that make the money.

The Internet in large part, is based on what government came up with, but these conservatives would have shut down the R&D back in the 1970s.
