Yes, that is very good advice. A lot of the time just knowing that employees are watching and aware of the shoplifter is enough deterrent. For the drug addicts who are off their rocker and unpredictable, you don't want to confront them or risk violence if you are in a position to put yourself in harm's way. It's just not worth it.

Comment Nuclear Power Industry won't be happy (Score 3, Insightful) 120

I remember years ago reading that the nuclear power construction companies purposely setup regulatory roadblocks so that the West would be stuck using 1940's ERA reactor designs originally for producing weapons grade uranium. It's sad that this is another breakthrough technology coming out of China due to the west not willing to move away from legacy nuclear power...

How many of these people reporting poor mental health are going untreated? I have a couple people who report to me who are definitely not doing so great mentally but going untreated and deny having any issues even with all the support and workplace mental health programs available. One I just let go, and another one I'd love to get rid of if my manager didn't have such a soft spot for the guy and doesn't care about all the drama he causes. I think a lot of the time, toxic workplaces start at the top, and it's the managers job to (even though this is corny) foster an inclusive and collaborative work environment. Then if you have toxic employees, it's the managers job to try and coach and provide support options for those problem employees to reform.

Comment Investing not vendor financing (Score 1, Interesting) 46

I would argue this not circular deals. Nvidia has an interest in supporting the AI and AGI research and development. The amounts of money they are investing are barely rounding errors too. If AGI happens, then this will unlock trillions for all these companions for just billions in investment... I remember when Nortel was doing vendor financing for all these deadbeat companies to buy their equipment. It ruined them because they were trying to artificially boost their stock price, and not investing in those companies to help try and support progress.

Wow, that must have been scary, but glad your kid was ok in the end. I know the dairy producers have always wanted to ban non dairy substitute foods from using "milk", "yogurt", "cheese". I don't think it causes general confusion or misleading consumers. I avoid dairy, and it's easier to know what I'm buying when looking for the non dairy alternatives.

Libraries should roll out their own LLM agent that's sandboxed to the libraries book list, then point the Dingu's to use that...... On a side note, I know a lot of libraries and librarians in Canada also have the issue of people with severe mental health and substance abuse issues using library facilities as a substitute for packed homeless shelters. So I'm wondering if that's adding to the weird mix of being a crisis counselor as well as being IT support and librarian.
