check the adoption curve of both. being "of the same vintage" doesn't mean they were popularized or matured at the same rate

you can say the same about a ton of programming languages, C, C++, etc, heck, i bet i could find 10 people who'd say the same about assembly. I used to know a few guys who thought MIPS assembly was the greatest thing ever.
there are perhaps millions of those with "a background in shell scripting" yet when Python and others came along, the popularity of Perl tumbled like a dead camel.
and that's despite most needing to use venv to make sure your Python will run if it depends on external libraries.
even that trainer dropped Perl years ago - why?
because he went back to some complex prod stuff he wrote a long time ago and said it took longer to figure out how to modify or update his old code than to re-implement it in Python.

the corporate trainer at an ISP i worked at in the 90s used to joke that he could write 5 Perl scripts that all did the same thing and no one could understand how any of them worked

in 2017, SpaceX was contracted for a lunar orbit which became the DearMoon project, scheduled for 2023 which Elon said would superduper happen.
In 2024, Yusaku Maezawa cancelled the project because of SpaceX's repeated changes of direction & developmental delays. I think SpaceX has done some terrific stuff but it seems much of it was in spite of Elon, not because of him
