davecotter writes: So Google’s staring at its old goo.gl links and thinking, “Why is this perfectly functioning service still even a thing?” After many businesses and users adopted it like it was the second coming of the way-too-long hyperlink, Google’s now decided to yank the plug. Starting August 23, 2024, you’ll get a flashy “don’t say we didn’t warn you” pop-up, and by August 25, 2025, goo.gl links (unless made by Google itself) will vanish into the 404 abyss.

Translation: Thanks for trusting us—now pack up and find a new shortener.

BrianFagioli writes: Apple has released a new developer tool on GitHub called Container, offering a fresh approach to running Linux containers directly on macOS. Unlike Docker or Podman, this tool is designed to feel at home in the Apple ecosystem and hooks into frameworks already built into the operating system.

Container runs standard OCI images, but it doesnâ(TM)t use a single shared Linux VM. Instead, it creates a small Linux virtual machine for every container you spin up. That sounds heavy at first, but the VMs are lightweight and boot quickly. Each one is isolated, which Apple claims improves both security and privacy. Developers can run containerized workloads locally with native macOS support and without needing to install third-party container platforms.

Questions and answers to the site have plummeted more than 90% since April of 2020. So here's what Stack Overflow will try next.

— They're bringing back Chat, according to their CEO (to foster "even more connections between our community members" in "an increasingly AI-driven world").

— They're building a "new Stack Overflow" meant to feel like a personalized portal. "It might collect videos, blogs, Q&A, war stories, jokes, educational materials, jobs... and fold them together into one personalized destination."

— They're proposing areas more open to discussion, described as "more flexible Stack Exchanges... where users can explore ideas or share opinions."

— They're also licensing Stack Overflow content to AI companies for training their models.

— Again, they will test paying experts to answer questions.

Truth. One of the reasons why I keep gravitating back to defense work. Only since around 2004 or so; there's now this "government shutdown" nonsense, which is a bit of a vicious circle, because programs get fucked over, then you have to roll off the contract and find work on another. And sometimes, there isn't any. (happened to me at Lockheed), so some people have to cycle back into the private sector for a few years (which isn't a bad thing; because THAT is where you pick up new skills, to be honest). Then when some asshole "businessman" crashes the business and does layoffs (to replace you with H1B's), you're back on the street again, and you end up back in the "safe" sector: defense. Oh, and if your Clearance expires while you're in the private sector, then the contractor just pays the $10k (or whatever it is now) to re-do your investigation. This has happened to me twice now.

Why anyone would intentionally use win11 outside of work requirements. It's a shitshow.

The sane ones moved to Linux and Macs years ago, although Sequoia is shaping up to be almost as bad bugwise from the reports that I've seen so far. Might be worth revisiting around July or August.

It's like both companies outsourced their OS developers to the cheapest bidder. There's no damn excuse for it.

MS has been trying to drive users to Der Cloud for years and give up their home PC experience in favor of Web-based apps and remote desktop. Which sucks all around, especially if your Internet goes down.

They deserve to fail hard, but idiot lusers and web influencers keep propping them up and uselessly complaining about the bugs. MS DOESN'T CARE.

Get over it. STFU. Get away from the abusive company. Install Linux and pay someone to port/recreate the apps/functionality that you're missing. It's all SOFTWARE. Some team with enough resources and good customer service can even (re)make it better.

Fuck Mars. Let's go back to the Moon first, establish a base/colony there, and see if we can survive for 15-20 years. It's RIGHT THERE, not months away.
