Comment The ones doing nothing are less damaging (Score 1) 237

Over my career as a consultant I’ve more than once had to tell a customer I could fix a particularly bad piece of code with several days effort or just rewrite it properly from scratch in about 1/3 the amount of time.

This is beyond stupid. Software is written and written things are copyrighted. Putting a patent on software would be like putting a patent on the concept of a novel that’s a mystery with a female detective. Then no one else could write that exact kind of book.

The CFOs job seems much more structured and rules driven than the CEOs. They also seem to be the most dispassionate part of the C-Suite. I’d look seriously at everyone in the organization with an MBA as a likely candidate for replacement.

Submission + - China is launching bombs via railgun (interestingengineering.com)

Tangential writes: US Navy efforts towards rail guns didnâ(TM)t work out spectacularly well, but it appears that the PRC is also researching them . It appears that they are making headway

Chinaâ(TM)s Peopleâ(TM)s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has tested a new smart bomb-launching electromagnetic rail gun. According to reports, the weapon launched the bomb 9 miles (15km) into the stratosphere at Mach 5+.
However, the test did find some issues around projectile stability that sent the bomb off target. The PLAN will now conduct more research and development to rectify the issue.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the rail gunâ(TM)s smart bomb projectile features a pair of gliding wings for guided descent. These wings enable the bomb to, in theory, follow a gentle curve and hit a target around 3 minutes after launch.
However, something went wrong during the test fire, and the bomb went way off its intended target.

âoeThe projectile did not follow the expected trajectory, and the maximum range and altitude did not meet the design values,â said the Naval Engineering University team led by Lu Junyong in a peer-reviewed paper published by the academic journal Transactions of China Electrotechnical Society.

Luâ(TM)s team discovered that the smart bomb was rotating too fast during its ascent, which appears to have caused it to tilt unpredictably. Using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Lu and his colleagues identified what they believe to be the cause of the failure.

Comment What a waste of time (Score 5, Interesting) 42

Our education system has abandoned most 'life skills'. Those include things that everyone needs to know (basic cooking & cleaning; how to change a tire; how to manage money; etc.) But we're going to have a high school teacher (who usually can't code their way out of a wet paper bag much less design a ui or debug data access code) 'teach' students programming.

This will probably set the students programming skill back rather than helping them.

I could see if they wanted to focus on teaching students how to use typical UIs; how to use their devices securely; how to protect their identity; understanding (at a high level) how networks and routers work, etc but having people who can't code (or write user specs or write functional specs or design UIs or test cases) teach students who have no interest (or probably aptitude) in programming is a joke.

By the time most kids who really want to program have gotten to HS they will have already figured out more than than a HS teacher can teach.

We continue to degrade our education system a little more each year.

Comment Hopefully it will be an optional feature (Score 1) 232

If Apple is forced to add it then hopefully it will be an optional feature.

The whole messaging 'problem' is pretty much a ploy because RCS exists primarily to provide Google with another channel to push advertising on us. If it is forced into messages then I would certainly not consider activating it on iOS devices if I could avoid it. I would not enjoy providing Google with a mechanism to shove unsolicited ads into my phone without my permission or participation.

There are basically zero issues with exchanging plain text SMS messages interoperably between iOS and other devices. You don't get guaranteed delivery or read receipts but neither of those is a particularly valuable feature. I definitely don't really feel like I need to notify senders that I read their text. Sending multi media may complicate things for some people but there are lots of other tools for doing that.

As much as possible, I want to keep my phone from increasing Google's advertising revenues.
