Submission + - Dartmouth College reinstates standardized test result submission for admissions

ardmhacha writes: After making the submission of SAT/ACT results optional (along with most other colleges in the US) for admissions because of the disruptions due to COVID-19 they announced that they will requires test submission for the Class of 2029 (admission in Fall 2025). They announced https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fadmissions.dartmouth.e... "Informed by new research, Dartmouth will reactivate the standardized testing requirement for undergraduate admission beginning with applicants to the Class of 2029".

A study https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhome.dartmouth.edu%2Fsit... conducted by the college found that "SAT and ACT scores are highly predictive of academic performance at Dartmouth." and that "certain non-test score inputs in the admissions process, such as guidance counselor recommendations, do not predict college performance even though they do advantage more-advantaged applicants at IvyPlus institutions, increasing their admissions chances."

MIT had previously reinstated the SAT/ACT requirement https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2022%2F0...

Submission + - Crimea is now shown as Russian territory on Apple Maps when viewed from Russia. (bbc.com)

ardmhacha writes: Apple has complied with Russian demands to show the annexed Crimean peninsula as part of Russian territory on its apps. Russian forces annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014, drawing international condemnation. The region, which has a Russian-speaking majority, is now shown as Russian territory on Apple Maps and its Weather app, when viewed from Russia. But the apps do not show it as part of any country when viewed elsewhere.

The tech giant originally suggested it could show Crimea as undefined territory — part of neither Russia nor Ukraine. But Vasily Piskaryov, chairman of the Duma security and anti-corruption committee reminded them that labelling Crimea as part of Ukrainian territory was a criminal offence under Russian law.

Apple has not yet commented on the decision.

Google, which also produces a popular Maps app, does not show Crimea as belonging to either Russia or Ukraine on its maps. However, it uses the Russian spelling of Crimean place names, rather than the Ukrainian spelling, on its maps in Russia. Most of the international community, including the EU and the US, does not recognise the annexation of Crimea to Russia.

Submission + - 22 year old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen is the new World Chess Champion

ardmhacha writes: Magnus Carlsen was able to force a draw in the 10th game of the World Chess Chamionship to claim the title with a 6.5 — 3.5 win (+3 -0 =7) over Viswanathan Anand. http://chennai2013.fide.com/anand-carsen-game-1-live-analysis-video/
Carlsen became the youngest ever World No. 1 in 2010 but withdrew from the 2012 championship cycle and so has only now been able to add the World Champion title to his No 1 ranking.

He won three games and lost none, his first two victories came when he was able to convert small advantages in the end game into wins. The third (in game 9) came after an Anand blunder.

Submission + - Zynga to employees: Give back our stock or you'll (cnet.com)

ardmhacha writes: Zynga seem to think they were a little generous handing out stock to early employees. Fearing a "Google Chef" situation they are leaning on some employees to hand back their unvested stock or face termination. The Wall Street Journal also has a take. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204621904577018373223480802.html
