I remember reading a history book about the Battle of Midway (No, I don't remember the name any more.) that mentioned that the IJN ran on Tokyo Time no matter where they were. As the fleet included transports carrying soldiers to invade Midway after "dealing" with the USN, the soldiers, mostly poorly educated peasants, were left wondering why the sun was rising at 3 AM. Now, imagine what it would be like for children who never bothered to go to school if we try year-round DST again. That's not an argument against the idea, just an observation about one of the side effects of doing so.

And that's why I specified "as practiced here," meaning on Slashdot. I don't visit Reddit or know anything about how it works, and didn't include them in my statement. Please don't assume that I meant anything other than exactly what I wrote.

This gives them a head start if it's for real, but also gives them enough time to turn around safely if it's a false alarm.

The "recruiter" asks the candidate to clone a GitHub project and open it using Cursor. It doesn't look like you're running anything. You're just opening a project file.

The Cursor installation is legit (downloaded from the official location) and the GitHub repository is 99% source-code so it doesn't look harmful. The problem is that the repository contains a Cursor-specific configuration file that downloads and runs a binary when the project is opened.

These AI tools are not very smart, to say the least. In any case, luckily my antivirus blocked the operation; otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed.

The VA uses a form of 2FA that's provided by a third-party (I've run across it on other sites once or twice.) that will use either text messages or email, your choice. What you get by text (I've not tried email.) is a six digit one-time code that you use to confirm your ID. If you run across a site wanting to use ID.ME to authenticate you, it's safe to use. I've been using it for several years and had no trouble.

Last estimate I heard said that the contamination in Oak Ridge from the Manhattan Project and the Cold War would not be cleaned up until 2050 -- 100+ years after the end of WWII.

You think that's bad? That's nothing compared to Zone rouge in northern France and Belgium. It's been uninhabitable since about 1919, and is expected to stay that way for at least 300 years, possibly as much as 700 and not because of radioactivity. No, it's because of heavy metal contamination, unexploded ordinance and poison gas shells that didn't (yet) go off.

I'm not saying that they don't. And that's why sports figures have agents so that they don't have to be good negotiators themselves. My point is that being in a union doesn't stop you from negotiating if you think you can do better.
