Journal Timex's Journal: Found at a job fair 5

A vast majority of you may not be aware of the fact that the economy has affected Chez Timex, which resulted in me starting a job search just before Christmas.

This past week, I attended a job fair in a nearby metropolitan city, and I have to say I saw the most interesting position: an employer was looking for someone that did SysAdmin work and Graphic Design work. (Basically, they are a relatively small establishment with presences in at least three major cities around the country. They are looking for someone who would be able to maintain their infrastructure, maintain their web server(s), and design the UI of their website. Further questioning on my part led to the "sysadmin and graphic design" summarization on my part.)

I thought this position particularly fascinating because I've never heard of a position that needed a graphically-inclined SysAdmin. When the Dot-Com bubble burst, I saw a lot of SysAdmin+DBA requirements, but never anything like this.

Unfortunately, I couldn't apply for the job. The graphics design requirement was being considered a major facet of this position, so lack of graphic design skills meant no interest at all in the candidate. (I know this for sure-- I asked.)

Employers are perfectly entitled to require whatever skill set they wish, and it is not my intention to poke fun at them or anything. I simply wanted to state that I found this interesting (in a peculiar way). <shrug>

That is all...

  • that could be the basis for some incredible geek humor. seriously. not just that specific company - but the idea of someone who has the stereotypical temperament of an artist working as a sysadmin. There could be comedy gold going the other way as well.

designer/admin:Well, I was having trouble keeping track of groups and permissions so I assigned them all colors to make it easier. But then there were just some horrible clashes in certain

  • Part sysadmin, part corporate politician.

  • One job my wife went in for an interview right after college had was sysadmin/greenhouse worker. She didn't take the job since it was a completely silly combination.

Btw, good luck at finding a new position quickly.

  • My wife is looking too, though I know its not for the same line of work. At least in Oregon it has been pretty tough so far.
  • Surprisingly, I know a bunch* of people like that. I used to work at a newspaper where the sysamdins of certain systems were required to be able to know how to mke ads and whatnot. Thankfully I wasn't one that needed to know that because I'm terrible with graphics.
