Submission + - Ask Slashdot: How to Manage Seasonal Music Files

Thelasko writes: I've recently purchased some Christmas music for my music collection. However, I'm annoyed that my current Christmas music occasionally plays throughout the year when my music player is on random. Adding to the collection will only make that occur more frequently. What's the best way to manage seasonal music files so they're only played at the appropriate time of year?

Submission + - Tesla Deletes Elon Musk's "Master Plan" (yahoo.com)

Thelasko writes: Tesla has quietly pulled its 2006 "Secret Master Plan" climate manifesto from its website, as first spotted by Forbes.

The now-deleted document laid out how the Elon Musk-led company was hoping to fight climate change by electrifying cars and powering them with solar energy.

Almost two decades later, Musk's dedication to saving the environment has eroded greatly. The mercurial CEO recently even endorsed infamous climate change denier and former president Donald Trump.

During a chaotic chat on X-formerly-Twitter earlier this month, Musk told Trump "I don’t think we should vilify the oil and gas industry and the people that have worked very hard in those industries to provide the necessary energy to support the economy."

That's a far cry from Musk's 2006 promise of helping to "expedite the move from a mine-and-burn hydrocarbon economy towards a solar electric economy, which I believe to be the primary, but not exclusive, sustainable solution."

Submission + - Delta Airlines CEO Praises Apple (9to5mac.com)

Thelasko writes: While Delta continues to rely on Microsoftâ(TM)s IT infrastructure, CEO Bastian still had pointed words for the company.

When asked about Delta and Microsoftâ(TM)s relationship moving forward, he said:

"My sense is theyâ(TM)re probably the most fragile platform within that space. When was the last time you heard of a big outage at Apple?"

Submission + - Southwest Airlines Outdated Computers Keep Company Running (yahoo.com)

Thelasko writes: Nearly every flight in the U.S. is grounded right now following a CrowdStrike system update error that’s affecting everything from travel to mobile ordering at Starbucks — but not Southwest Airlines flights. Southwest is still flying high, unaffected by the outage that’s plaguing the world today, and that’s apparently because it’s using Windows 3.1.

Submission + - Oklahoma man hacked government site to buy cars at auction for $1 (nbcnews.com)

Thelasko writes: Evan James Coker bought vehicles and jewelry in 2019 through web auctions held by the General Service Administration, officials said. The sales are intended to help get rid of surplus materials or items seized by authorities.

His bids were not unusual amounts, in the thousands of dollars, but when it came time to pay, Coker “breached the pay.gov website and falsified the true auction price to $1,” the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Coker was indicted on three counts of wire fraud in March 2023 and pleaded guilty to one count Wednesday, according to court records.

Submission + - NASA Has Lost Contact with Ingenuity Helicopter (npr.org) 1

Thelasko writes: NASA has lost contact with its beloved helicopter on Mars, Ingenuity.

Communications broke down on Thursday, when the little autonomous rotorcraft was sent on a "quick pop-up vertical flight," to test its systems after an unplanned early landing during its previous flight, the agency said in a status update on Friday night.

The Perseverance rover, which relays data between the helicopter and Earth during the flights, showed that Ingenuity climbed to its assigned maximum altitude of 40 feet, NASA said.

But during its planned descent, the helicopter and rover stopped communicating with each other.

Submission + - Nate Silver to Leave FiveThirtyEight (hollywoodreporter.com)

Thelasko writes: Renowned data journalist, Nate Silver, announced he will be leaving the company as soon as his contract expires. Although Disney owns the FiveThirtyEight brand, it is believed that Silver retains ownership of the site's algorithms.

Submission + - Russia Claims to Have Used a Laser Weapon in Battle (bbc.com)

Thelasko writes: Yury Borisov, the deputy prime minister in charge of military development, told Russian TV that a laser prototype called Zadira was being deployed in Ukraine and had burned up a Ukrainian drone within five seconds at a distance of 5km (three miles).

Little is known about the Zadira laser programme, but in 2017 Russian media said state nuclear corporation Rosatom had helped develop it as part of a programme to create weapons based on new physical principles, news agency Reuters reported.

However, an official with the US Department of Defense said he had not seen "anything to corroborate reports of lasers being used" in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mocked the Russian claim, comparing it to the so-called "wonder weapons" that Nazi Germany claimed to be developing during World War Two.

Submission + - NASA Rover Spots Mars 'Flower' Formation (cnet.com)

Thelasko writes: NASA's Curiosity rover snapped a gorgeous, delicate formation on Mars that looks like it could be a branching piece of ocean coral. It's not coral, but it's worth contemplating how we see familiar Earth objects in random shapes on Mars.

The image comes from Curiosity's Mars Hand Lens Imager (Mahli) instrument, which NASA describes as "the rover's version of the magnifying hand lens that geologists usually carry with them into the field." So the formation in the image is quite small.

Submission + - Epstein-Barr virus may be leading cause of multiple sclerosis (harvard.edu)

Thelasko writes: The team analyzed serum samples taken biennially by the military and determined the soldiers’ EBV status at time of first sample and the relationship between EBV infection and MS onset during the period of active duty. In this cohort, the risk of MS increased 32-fold after infection with EBV but was unchanged after infection with other viruses. Serum levels of neurofilament light chain, a biomarker of the nerve degeneration typical in MS, increased only after EBV infection. The findings cannot be explained by any known risk factor for MS and suggest EBV as the leading cause of MS.

Submission + - Race is on to reach sunken US plane... before China (bbc.com)

Thelasko writes: The $100m (£74m) F-35C plane came down in the South China Sea after what the Navy describes as a "mishap" during take-off from the USS Carl Vinson.

The jet is the Navy's newest, and crammed with classified equipment. As it is in international waters, it is technically fair game.

Whoever gets there first, wins.

The prize? All the secrets behind this very expensive, leading-edge fighting force.

"The F-35 is basically like a flying computer. It's designed to link up other assets — what the Air Force calls 'linking sensors to shooters'."
China doesn't have that technology so getting their hands on it would give them a huge leap forward.

Submission + - Rocket scientists and brain surgeons aren't necessarily more clever - study (bbc.com)

Thelasko writes: Researchers asked 329 aerospace engineers and 72 neurosurgeons to complete a series of tasks to test their cognition.

The results, published in the British Medical Journal, show few differences with members of the British public.

Researchers said their study was partly carried out to see which profession had the intellectual edge.

It also sought to find out if public perceptions of the sectors were grounded in reality.
