The problem is not overall capacity. It's that they're all crowding into the same areas. Most places in the US (let alone the world) have nobody building datacentres anywhere near them. They all want to go into the places with not merely cheap power, but cheap property taxes and other incentives. Some places will tax everything, down to the servers themselves, whereas some will only tax the land and the building shell, not even the power interconnects or cooling systems.

When everyone wants to rush into the same place, it overtaxes the local grid; they have to build not just more generation, but power lines, substations, etc. And all of this has to go through permitting. There's no real limit to how much generation can be built, but none of the datacentre operations want to wait, because they're all worried about missing out on the opportunity. Hence the reason that they try to come up with stopgaps, like installing their own generators, or... this approach.

All of the small groups could change their behavior as much as they can afford to and it wouldn't add up to changing the behavior of just one or two of the biggest groups. The individual's power is limited as well, they choose from what's on the menu, they don't determine what's listed. Don't blame the victims.

I have some ancient Sennheiser HD 420s, I had to replace the foams (and hacked some other Sennheiser foams for that) but they are otherwise still flawless. The cord is nigh-indestructible and super long. And they are also super comfortable, they weigh nothing. It's way smarter to get used Sennheisers than new Bose.

There are sadly just projects which depend on older versions still being used. It's pretty normal for an ISP to need to maintain at least a couple of versions. And since PHP changes important things in minor versions sometimes, you need at least a couple of minor versions of each as well. That's probably my least favorite thing about PHP.

I used to feel that way before they enshittified it.
