I.e. it does well things that, for the most part, you can do yourself just as easily, and maybe even with less hassle. Unclear whether it can do the very helpful and useful things that a human assistant easily could.

They are, by and large, for-profit companies that make open source contributions because those in charge of said companies think that doing so helps them increase their profits. That's all. You are not supposed to remember such companies, much less be grateful to them; you use their wares if that is to your advantage and you ditch them once that is not the case any more.

Indeed. Maybe one day the industry will pull its head out of that place where the sun never shines and realize that ditching their ridiculous artificial scarcity creation and making the material immediately, conveniently and easily available all the time at reasonable prices would largely do away with piracy. I will not hold my breath in the meantime though.
