Submission + - 3 decades of satellite data confirm predictions of early sea level rise models (wiley.com)

Mr. Dollar Ton writes: Three decades of satellite-based measurements of global sea-level change enable a comparison of models and reality and show that early IPCC climate projections were remarkably accurate. Predictions of glacier mass loss and thermal expansion of seawater were comparatively successful, but the ice-sheet contributions were underestimated. The findings provide confidence in model-based climate projections.

Key findings:

* IPCC projections in the mid-1990s of global sea-level change over the next 30 years were remarkably robust

* The largest disparities between projections and observations were due to underestimated dynamic mass loss of ice sheets

* Comparison of past projections with subsequent observations gives confidence in future climate projections

Oh my god, dude, how much are the gas companies paying you?

You run into the same things with gas cars. Oh, I'll just pop into the gas station on the way to work. If it's open when I'm driving to work. If it's not busy. If the pumps aren't down. If you don't mind standing there in the weather pumping for five minutes. If you don't mind the gas stench. If you remembered your wallet. If if if.

I've been in a movie theatre maybe twice in the past decade. Spending (god knows how much now) on tickets, only to have to watch thirty minutes of adverts before the actual movie starts, and not having any control of what rude people show up to the theatre fiddling with their cell phones the whole time is no longer fun. After 9/11 and the endless wars and corruption that came from it, both movies and TV became a lot darker. I miss the days when the only actual presidential scandal was a blow job. Things were much lighter then. Hollywood should not get all the blame for it. Society changed. America is the only place where a show like "Breaking Bad" could make sense. Nowhere else are people losing their life savings over medical debt. No wonder we lost our sense of humor.

Submission + - Recreating a Rare Mutation Could Grant Almost Universal Virus Immunity For Days (sciencealert.com)

alternative_right writes: The mutation, a deficiency in interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), causes a mild yet persistent inflammation across the body. Examining patients' immune cells revealed they'd had the usual run of encounters with flu, measles, chickenpox, and mumps, yet they'd never reported feeling particularly ill as a result.

Further investigation revealed their body's virus-fighting proteins were constantly on a low level alert, never really put away for later like in most people.

Submission + - New Zealand Air Traffic Control failure likely caused by data transfer issue

twosat writes: The air traffic control failure that disrupted transtasman flights at the weekend was caused by an issue with the cross-system transfer of flight information data, says Airways New Zealand’s boss. https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nzherald.co.nz%2Fnz%2F...

New Zealand’s oceanic air traffic control system was disrupted by a technical fault in Airways’ main Operational Control System (OCS) platform on Saturday night.

The fault closed oceanic airspace, forcing five Australia-bound flights to circle off New Zealand’s coast, and delaying planes in both countries.

My bad, those were Telsa global delivery numbers, not US. For the US sales numbres:

Q1 Sales: 128,100 vehicles were sold and Q2 Sales: 143,535 vehicles were sold for a total of 271,635 which would mean a significant number of EVs were purchased from other vendors this year in the US. THAT's a big deal if you're a Tesla stock holder or employee.

Obviously stated by someone who has never driven a modern EV. Because they have the torque of a turbo diesel, the speed of an LS8 and at more than 2x the energy conversion efficiency. They get ~300 miles on effectively the energy of 3 gallons of gasoline.

But, if you REALLY like driving snow plow looking vehicles becasue they look manly have at it. But don't judge until you've pinned yourself into the seat a few times in one of the many EVs on the market today.

Google says Tesla sold Q1 2025, 336,681 vehicle deliveries and Q2 2025, 384,122 vehicles delivered.
I guess some of those could have been sold in 2024 but a full 100,000 unit difference and that's just Telsa so the 50,000 or so GM and Ford sold aren't even counted. Note, just guessing on the Ford and GM number since they are usually just a fraction of Tesla sales.
