I was thinking the same thing. Of course the government has their own way around the rules. However, what if you turn off your device before arriving? It's current state is off and encrypted and will remain encrypted until you unlock it. if you don't unlock the device then the "current state" of the device is not as useful.

Just a thought.

Pretty much. Only it was mostly enterprises making the move to stay compliant.

IMO - The successful adoption rate of Windows 11 was primarily due to the end-of-support date for Windows 10 set by Microsoft. Organizations were pushed to adopt Windows 11 or face the financial consequences. MS charges more to support "end of life" systems, cyber-insurance companies will charge more, compliance requirements change when organizations have old systems, etc.

As always, individual users made their own decisions but these days some choose to ditch the PC and user their phone.

Remove the apps.

I have no games or social media (easy since I don't really have any accounts) on my phone. I use it to communicate with actual friends and family. I keep an eye on email and occasionally use the browser but I do not like mobile web so most times i just wait until I can use a desktop OS.

Digital distraction sounds more like a home/parenting problem, than a school problem.

There are plenty of alternatives these days. From the completely DIY with ESP32, RPI, etc to build your own speaker to commercial streaming boxes that are not locked in to any one service. If you are so inclined there are the somewhere in-between options to tie into locally running services like Squeezebox, Home Assistant w/ Music Assistant, etc.

Sonos is for Muggles.

Precisely!

Amazon started off as a website where you could buy books. IRC it was for hard to find books. What a weird way to revisit their roots.

I agree but at the end of the day there is no amount of money they contracted partner can pay back that will bring back data that is lost/stolen. Just like having insurance that covers your house burning down; you'll get some money but you won't get your family pictures, heirlooms, etc back.

Something like the 3-2-1 backup strategy should apply here. X copies on Y number of providers and at least 1 is immutable.

This. If everyone just wasted their time then their costs would outweigh the return.

IMO you cannot rely on users without having safeguards in place. Mistakes will happen plus there is always the threat of malicious behavior.

They also sell to people who have a need for status symbols. ;-)

The logical first step for sensitive files is to prevent external IDs from having access. Does Apple sharing have the ability to prevent access from IDs external to the org?

To me the biggest value Apple brings to the table is the hardware lifecycle. Their stuff typically is supported for a decent number of years and OS performance remains acceptable.

Proof yet again that Apple does not design products and services for businesses. They focus is on a particular user experience which has allowed them to get enterprise customers through creatives and execs.

Your Van Halen comment knocked some cobwebs down in my brain. I recalled reading about rider contracts for bands on tour on TheSmokingGun.

"Made famous by Van Halen’s contractual demand that brown M&M's be plucked from the group’s candy bowl"

This. I created a Twitter account in its' early days and quickly decided it wasn't for me. Until recently using a web browser to open links I get from friends occasionally worked fine. Now that the app is required to view some content, I simply don't bother.
