Submission + - OnLive is Dead? Long Live err...something else.. (forbes.com)

Lashat writes: News is trickling out of vairous sources. The Forbes link above seems to have the most up to date info. Basically, all employees received their walking papers today. Then rumors of a shutdown, buyout, or re-formation as a new company have abounded.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/08/17/onlive-denies-shutting-down-but-multiple-sources-confirm-layoffs/

From the first reports...
InXile CEO Brain Fargo also Tweeted that an employee from within OnLive had emailed him that the company was close to going out of business. Here’s the email:

I wanted to send a note that by the end of the day today, OnLive as an entity will no longer exist. Unfortunately, my job and everyone else’s was included. A new company will be formed and the management of the company will be in contact with you about the current initiatives in place, including the titles that will remain on the service.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with you and I’m sure our path with cross again.

When asked for comment, OnLive’s Director of Corporate Communications told Forbes’ Jason Evangelho: “No, let me be clear. We are not going out of business.”

Submission + - $115 ticket issued by a BUS camera? (sfexaminer.com) 1

Lashat writes: San Francisco MUNI bus system has outfitted 30 so far and "Within the next 15 months, every one of Muni’s 819 buses will be outfitted with cameras capable of snapping photos of vehicles illegally travelling or parking in The City’s transit-only lanes. Any car caught on tape will be subject to fines of up to $115."

Read for yourself.
http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/transportation/2012/02/muni-expanding-camera-program-nab-drivers-transit-only-lanes

“The cameras have been instrumental in changing driver behavior. When cars see a bus coming, they get the hell out of the way now.” said John Haley, transit director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni.

Now for the scary part: “We’re starting to get a lot of experience with cameras,” said Haley. “With all the footage, I’m starting to feel a bit like Cecil B. Demille.”

WHAT?? Mr. Haley is cutting and splicing footage for his upcoming film project. There is no reason for this office to have access to the footage from the buses. I guess I could get over that since they are techincally making the films themselves so they own the footage.

What I can't believe is that MUNI is being co-opted into being a law/traffic enforcement arm of the City of San Francisco. That is not what the MUNI funds are supposed to be directed towards.

Submission + - Vmware, a falling giant? (arstechnica.com)

Lashat writes: According to Ars Technica "A new survey seems to show that VMware's iron grip on the enterprise virtualization market is loosening, with 38 percent of businesses planning to switch vendors within the next year due to licensing models and the robustness of competing hypervisors."

What do /.ers say about moving away from what is IMHO the most stable and feature rich vm architecture available? Full disclosure:I am not clear on how the licensing has changed since that is not my department.
