It's not just subsidies; it's the batteries. CATL and BYD have engineered affordable LFP batteries. The USA has not been able to develop better batteries. The only option is to license battery tech from China for production in the USA. Until then the USA will be stuck with outdated ICE vehicles.

Don't use antiquated terms like socialism. If you have to define it you've already lost. Instead say private sector and public sector. They don't have the baggage associated with capitalism, socialism, and communism. Those are from the 1800s have been reduced to name calling labels.

Our library system allow you to browse and reserve materials statewide. They use a van to shuttle material between libraries. Librarians in general would like to offer this level of automation and service. They just need funding to set up the web sites. If your state does not have this kind of service you might want to talk to your state reps.

Once battery plants are running in the USA the outlook will improve. Costs will be lower and old NMC chemistries will be replaced. First LFP and later sodium, LMR, and eventually solid state batteries will dramatically change the EV landscape. The USA is a few years behind the state of the art so basing trends on currently available EVs misses the point.

Comment Marginal costs (Score 1) 54

The marginal costs of adding AI and bitcoin to the grid are significantly higher than the average cost. Data centers want to spread their high marginal cost out by raising the average rate. It is totally fair for them to pay at least the marginal cost if not to require them to build their own green power source. It's also fair to raise rates only for commercial customers or just ban them if commerce does not want to take the hit.

So far all EV fires have been in NMC batteries combined with poor battery management. Hybrids catch fire more than EVs for the same reason. eBikes built by armatures are notorious for NMC fires. LFP batteries solve the fire problem and cost less.

Generalizing fire safety to all EVs is FUD. The experience in the USA is negative since to date there are very few EVs with LFP batteries. NMC batteries use old technology and will go away as better chemistries go into production.
