We got a PDP-8 in 1969 and had programmable calculators before that. We might have been the third. Before the calculators a group of us built a logic plugboard using relays, plugs, and switches from a friend's dad owned a small factory that supplied AT&T. I helped take gear to teacher's conferences for demos. Our DEC sales rep invited us to use demo machines at the regional sales offices. Myself and a friend visited several times and used a bunch of early PDPs. They had shelves of manuals and let us take any we wanted; which we devoured. Years later, got a job at DEC. I have a great deal of gratitude to the teachers that convinced the school board to fund this.
