For Quake III, he helped implement an ingenious hack for computing 1/sqrt(x) [youtube.com] about 4x faster than a typical floating-point computation.

It never ceases to amaze me how many old wives tales to idolize certain people persist. Quake III code’s was obfuscated perhaps to peacock it but there was also great deal of prior art to this method. https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.beyond3d.com%2Fconte...

That is good news and definitely an improvement in efficiency. However many older and less powerful CPU's have able to software decode high bitrate 1080p single-tile AV1 encoded videos for a long time. AV1 hardware decoding for SoC types is very useful though like for example Fire TV Stick 4K Max has hardware AV1 decoding. If it didn't have AV1 hardware decoding support this device couldn't do playback of AV1.
