There are several $1000 US apps you can purchase, some of which require proof of assets in excess of one million$ to download. People pay thousands for clothing in exclusive locales such as Rodeo Drive for the express purpose of posturing to prove their wealth. So yeah, there's a niche market for this.
Rich people, in my observation, are secure enough in their wealth that they don't need to buy fancy cars, boats, clothes, and watches. It is upper middle class people, new rich (Kardashians) and temporarily rich (lottery winners) who buy all that garbage. Rich people get and stay rich by being wise with their money. They may buy one or two toys but they have a budget for toys and make sure they don't blow it.

I am not a conspicuous consumer, don't give a crap about fashion, making 'statements' with my clothes, whatever, BUT if I was going to drop 10k on a watch I'd get a Rolex -- simply because they hold their value. [Do I think they're worth it, absolutely not, but they do resell well regardless]
In 10 years a Rolex bought today will still be worth a lot, an apple watch will be a paperweight, maybe a quaint conversation piece, because the tech will be utterly useless more or less in that time.
I realize there are people with money to burn, but honestly, if I had 10k to casually throw around, there are SO many more fun toys to buy.

I think what many seem to have missed is that the Edition watches are going to be limited in production.
That alone ensures that if you get one, you'd be able to sell it for a long time well above what you paid for it...
But even 20 years from now you could probably get about asking price, from collectors who just like looking at it. That happens with real watches also...

Buy one, keep it in its original box, hope the product flops and barely sells, hope the next iterations of the product sell like hotcakes, offer your original as collectors item.

The target market for this watch is the people who want to tell the world "I am so rich that I drop $17K every other year on an ugly watch". hate to tell you this, but Rolex watches don't hold their value at all. Like a car, they lose half their value the second you put it on. Unlike Breitlings (yeah I'm crapping on about these again), which not only hold their value, but because they're all individually numbered, they become instant collectors items, hence their value only goes up. Example: my watch has an initial value of £12,800. Not long after I received it, it needed to go in for repair. Four days after it was sent off, it came back with £200 worth of repair done on it (needed a new hairspring). I actually had an offer by a member of staff at Beaverbrook's (an upmarket jewellery chain in England) for the initial retail price of the watch plus a bit after I took it in there first for a repair estimate: "We don't repair them in house, we send them off, but I'll give you 13 grand for it right now!". Tempting, but it was a gift from someone who is no longer with us.
Not being funny, but for thirteen fucking grand that watch had better be perfect and never ever break, especially not need a new spring for £200! That's just expensive for the sake of expense. Also, even less amount of people give a shit about your breitling than would a rolex, only other people with breitlings or upmarket jewellery shop staff. And for some real irony, what killed the watch? Ubiquitous cell phones. My phone has a clock. My phone has a calculator. My phone has a fitness tracker (dozens of them, potentially). My phone can play MP3s. My phone can make phone calls. My phone can issue reminders. My phone can wake me up. My phone can also take pictures and help me navigate by GPS and check my email (really check it, not just show me the subject line) and watch Youtube videos and play cheesy games and a whole host of other features that a watch cannot.
Now... If the Apple watch could do all of those things (except that last sentence) by itself, hey, I might consider that a more convenient form-factor than a 2.5x5" rectangular slab. Really, 90% of the time, I just need a clock/phone/tracker, and a watch has the advantage of not requiring pockets or a purse. But the Apple Watch doesn't even work without slaving it to an iPhone! So you gain... nothing!
Apple has made a huge mistake with this one. As in, "time to short AAPL" huge.

A $10k Apple Watch is going to attract thieves. Unlike a phone, which for some is a fashion accessory while out, but usually stays in the pocket/purse, this thing will be on your wrist continuously. It doesn't need to work to be valuable to someone just wanting to be seen with it. For someone with a stolen Apple Watch, saying it is out of batteries will be enough to explain away questions about why it isn't working.

investing is often used less formally to describe sinking resources into. In this sense it doesn't require any desire for financial return. You invest your time heavily into your hobby for example. The return can often be in enjoyment and value of a non-financial nature.

This is exactly the crux of the issue with the iWatch - the type of "investing" is totally subjective. So it's not clear. I have no idea what type of return, subjective or not, overpriced electronics that go obsolete within only a few years provide. I'm not being pedantic - It's absolutely not clear. For example, some people buy audio gear as more of a fashion statement than for audio quality (Beats; I'd venture Bose to some extent, too, and others.)

Of the equal options, I see 7 3 5 9 9 6 (in %). The last and first ones are not the highest values. The peak is just before the end. With your desctiption I'd expect 9 3 6 7 5 9: highest on the outer options and a minor peak half-way.
