Journal zogger's Journal: 200..the magic number 14

Well, this is annoying, just found out I hit the magic 200 number cut off point for friends (I have no foes). I have no idea how to go about going through the list and trying to find "abandoned" user accounts except by one by one method and checking by date, so I can delist those accounts so I can add more active users as friends. And just because some user/account doesn't write much or lately, doesn't mean they aren't still reading, and I would hate to accidentally de-friend someone because of an error like that. Are there any solutions other than becoming a paid subscriber, some setting or another that I am missing? (can't afford subscription at this point, I can contribute writing is about it for slashdot support)

The only thing I can think of is ask for a re-friend opt in, and give it a week or two, something simple like "yo, still here!".

Man, I REALLY hate to be a bother like that too, just can't think of any other practical way out of this dilemma. Lobby the slashdot overlords for a larger number perhaps?

Does this mean that Slashdot is second-rate to Facebook in a "key strategic business field?"

  • If you don't know if your Friends are still active then they probably aren't worth keeping as Friends. Sometimes it's practical to do some spring cleaning (I do this mainly with my Foes list). Keep the best ~200, and get rid of the ones who are less useful to you (less interesting, whatever...). Don't be a ninny about it. In RL I have no friends, and that's really the way I like it. A Friend on Slashdot is meaningless unless you gain no utility out of them. Symbolic Friending (i.e. you just like the person

  • I did that a while back and it was indeed tedious. I figured i was at least safe to delete entries for people who have not posted anything for 2 years, and if that doesn't clear enough, go to 1 year, and so on.

I haven't been posting (or even reading) Slashdot in general for the last few months (I'm not sure why... probably the way I have my RSS feeds "organized") and it used to be my "first stop" every morning.

I wish one of the several "open" standards would catch on for keeping track of all this stuff, an

  • I arduouslly(sp) looked at my friends as well.
I did keep anyone who journaled lately and is a fan.
The one problem is that you have to click the link to see last post date, while you don't for the journal.

  • ! out of 200 - will I make the cut, and stay on the team? I do hope so. :-)

Yep. It's really on my end though, to get JEs from friends. As long as folks still friend me, they get the journal entries. I just don't want to cut anyone off on my end just because they might not write very often, because usually those are the folks who REALLY got something to say if it is only once in a great while, they either have an astute observation or need help with some problem. I just really want to go through and remove actual inactive accounts, the abandoned ones. Slashdot should have an automa

      • How about now? Does having a subscription increase that number?

        • Who did that? Did you? Didn't even see it before! Man, I wasn't groveling or anything, just wondered if there was some way to help pare down the old inactive accounts more automagically than the tedious method. Whomever did this, thanks!

          • I didn't interpret it as groveling or anything like that. It's just something I like to do. It's been a while since I've gotten someone a subscription.

Did it work? I believe it doubles your friend/foe allotment.

Yes it does. I don't know if that "sticks" once the subscription runs out though, or if it reverts back.

Good luck. Sorry if I just delayed the inevitible and made it worse by potentially doubling the amount of trimming needing to be done.

        • Well, thanks man, appreciate it.
