Yes, such overinvestement wouldn't happen in a capitalist society ... like AI, or telecom, or railways, or... Anyway, AI datacenters also try to get as much as possible subsidies, government contracts, etc. They just have to sell it differently to the government, but it all comes down to "We cannot afford a mineshaft gap"

But a reason not to even use this technology is that it will release greenhouse gases on the short term after burning the gasoline, while keeping it as plastic wonâ(TM)t.

Depends the aim of your curriculum. To make a metaphor: learning to become a carpenter, it is more important to know what and where to saw, than to use a handsaw properly, if you have a tablesaw at hand. So, as stated by others, problem solving skills is always needed, doing it in C or assembly not so much. There is still a need for that as well, but not in every course

In case of the Dutch woman: a doctor in NL is not employed by the government. There are strict regulations for assisted suicide and while this case things went wrong, the fact the doctor is prosecuted, is due to these regulations, by the government. A patientâ(TM)s consent is the starting point. And GPs are very thorough on the procedures.
