Comment Tried that (Score 1) 1255

I changed my son to private school this year!! I tried working with the public school he was in. We met with teachers, with the principle, with the 504 councilor. Nothing, I mean NOTHING changed. The public school system is not interested in helping a child that needs help with his reading or spelling skills. Excuses at every turn and no one was willing to help. SO, now he's in private school and building his confidence that he can do the work in his classes.

One of the best ways is still having the computer in an open area of the home. That being said, I do have an older computer setup running linux to do blacklist filtering using Squid proxy and SquidGuard. No, it's not easy to setup, but rock solid when it is. I subscribe to Dan's Guardian blacklist thats updated once a week automatically. I also use this setup in a school environment and have had kids try to get around it, with no success. The blacklist blocks just about all proxy sites along with most everything imaginable. Again, no, it's not easy to setup, but the benefits are worth it. The Squid proxy server has to be setup between your network and router and must be setup to route all traffic through it. IF your kids are smart and have access to the server, they could defeat it. (Give me physical access and I own it!). There is alot of configuration options, with a lot of help online.

I admin a private school and have used Squid and SquidGuard with success. There are a couple of sites that provide the updated blacklists for just about everything. However, a blacklist will not stop everything. You have the ability to set the filtering and access to the internet by time limit as well. For the school, I only allow access to the internet during school hours. After hours only the teachers can get out. A friend of mine uses IPCop on his home system, it's basically SquidGuard, but installs a basic linux system with the proxy as the main app.

You need at a minimum a 5000 kw generator to run fridge, freezer, lights, and blower. You may could even run an electric water heater by itself. Since you are not familiar with electrical wiring, find a licensed electrician to install a transfer switch with a receptical to hook up the generator.

Buy a domain name from GoDaddy, set it up through ZoneEdit DNS(5 free), then have ZoneEdit mail-forward to your Gmail account. Your POP3 client (Thunderbird) can then connect to your Gmail acct and look like your sending and receiving email from your domain. Works great!
