I'm old enough to remember when China decided to open up to investment from the West. They made it perfectly clear what the rules were going to be, and that the rules might change at anytime.
Western Capital could not get into China quickly enough, looking at a vast, cheap labour market and potentially 1 billion new consumers.
Where we are now was absolutely predicted at the time, but was considered worth it.

Climate change skeptics aren't interested in evidence or facts though, they have made their opinions about this stuff a major part of their identities and the oil corporations that produce the propaganda they consume know exactly how to push their buttons.

To be fair, "we" don't actually get a say in this sort of stuff. The people who will profit from it get to decide whether it goes ahead or not, and they're not concerned about how it affects "us".
