I have been through 3 of these and the only real difference is that it was zoom - in every instance of a layoff there was a company meeting where people were separated into 2 groups, one to be informed they are being laid off and the other informing that the other group was being laid off. once I was in the group being laid off and twice I was in the laid off group - both times I was laid off it was when I was a manager.

You don't seem to understand the difference between getting sick and having symptoms (the side effects), these are 2 very different things. It is like the difference between being sore from exercising and getting injured. One is just your body displaying the stress it is under during the process of natural repair and the other is your body actively fighting something that is going wrong in your body.

There are plenty of trade jobs that require the worker to supply their own tools. Your connection isn't any different than that.

again not the same thing. it isn't providing tools, it is providing the worksite. Also you are not providing the tools, someone else is so you would be fired for something beyond your control. It would be akin to you being responsible for google going down if you used gmail because your employer did not supply an email. california state law says: The California Labor Code requires employers to cover "all necessary expenditures or losses" that workers incur while doing their jobs. Those costs can include the purchase of a desk, computer equipment and chair, as well as reimbursement for utilities, such as electricity, Internet or broadband, and phone service. meaning that officially they are responsible as the contractor of the service.

Why is it any different than requiring someone have certain certifications, degrees, or skills? Why, if the employer says sure you can work from home, but then you log in on dial up for a zoom meeting, can't they tell you that you're not living up to expectations?

qualifications are absolutely different than requiring you to supply the conveyance of the work. Imagine if you worked in a factory and they required you to supply the plastics or in an office and required you to supply paper and toner for the copier - and then fired you because you used inferior materials.

Electric cars don't reduce resource use. If anything replacing most existing vehicles will require enormous consumption of resources. Using them obviously reduces GHG emissions but otherwise don't fool yourself.

It does if you can convert energy sources to renewable sources, you will never convert petroleum based cars to a renewable source. Wind and solar only require the consumption for building and maintaining the infrastructure. Yet again this is all politics, where I live our power is over 85% from renewable sources - if you can get the majority of the US to convert the same way you can get a huge reduction in resource use.
