It's going to be fun watching companies waste their efforts on this and then seeing them all fail miserably trying to achieve something utterly hopeless (well, until everyone is required by law to use iLockedDown devices).

Don't worry about the fearmongering reply. If there are any facts or logic in your post, it's completely undetectable.

How on earth could having a weapon at home protect you from a shooting in your neighborhood? Unless It happends when you are in your home and somone is specifically out to kill you (which is highly unlikely unless you are gang member yourself) touting a gun would only make the situation much more dangerous for yourself and your family.

This would be great for me in China. That is, until google DNS gets blocked completely. Even using Google DNS in mainland China gives very odd random-seeming replies for requests to certain sites like facebook. It really seems like even request to foreign DNS servers get spoofed (though not consistently, about 1 in 20 reuqests seemed to acually give a facebook server).

The Green Grid Publishes New Data Center Recycling Metric 12

Nerval's Lobster writes "The Green Grid, which helped popularize metrics for minimizing wasted electricity in data centers, has developed a new method for cutting down on wasted electronics as old servers and other equipment reach their inevitable retirement. The Electronics Disposal Efficiency metric is designed to help minimize electronic waste, specifically servers and other enterprise hardware. It will take a cue from other organizations, including the Solving the E-waste Problem (StEP) Initiative. The Green Grid is trying to build on established regulations that govern the disposal of consumer electronics such as televisions, including the rules governing Waste Electronics and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) within the EU. The metric isn't concerned with whether equipment has been reused or recycled, or where it's broken down into component parts. But Green Grid decided that recyclers need to be ISO 14001 certified, on top of being audited 'to the end of the line'—presumably to ensure that materials were being recycled and not discarded somewhere along the recycling chain."

Also, writing such a 'useless' system might actually be what your professors are looking for, since it's what you are likely going to work on much of your time as a corporate code monkey. 'Useless' here meaning: in your perception, not to the corporate bottom line.

Sounds highly unlikely, that would imply the professors are actually aware of the outside world.

The BIG convenience of owning a gun and ammunition is that I can take my amphetami^D^D^D prescription meds, drink a shot of jack and then impulsively decide to unload said gun on anyone that is within range, immediately, with immediate effect and a very low risk of danger to self.

The BIG convenience of owning a gun and ammunition is that I can take my gun and ammunition and defend my home from you, immediately, with immediate effect, without the high risk of waiting 20 minutes for the police to arrive.

And for dropping someone jacked up on drugs, 7 rounds might not be enough to get the job done definitively.

The thing is that person probably wouldn't have a gun too in the first place, if it weren't for guns being so easily accessible. Anyway unless someone is comming specifically to kill you, what good is it to start a firefight in your own home? How likely is it that you or your family members ends up being the ones that get shot instead of handing over material possesions?

Pro Tip - if you have to resort to draconian measure to collect taxes you're probably taxing people too much.

I think people will always have more or less ambivalent views when it comes to taxes, it's never fun to pay up. Though after all, Norway is a democracy and most people actually voted for the socialist/environmentalist coalition hence they are in government. So I guess a majority is in favour of high taxes. Maybe for a lot of americans, it's hard to see connection between taxes and social welfare as so much of it gets spent on the military. But in the nordic countries, lowered taxes will very likely impact social benefits (and absolutely not just for the unemployed) and going to piss people of for sure unless you manage to do that in a very sublte and deceptive way.
