Submission + - New AI text generator may be too dangerous to release

umafuckit writes: The Guardian reports that GPT-2, the new text generator from OpenAI, is so good that it risks being used to malicious ends. As a result, OpenAI are delaying release. The model underlying GPT2 has been trained on 40 GB of text data and is able to write highly realistic prose. For example, after being fed the first few paragraphs of a news story, the AI continues with the paragraph: "Asked to clarify the reports, a spokesman for May said: ‘The PM has made it absolutely clear her intention is to leave the EU as quickly as is possible and that will be under her negotiating mandate as confirmed in the Queen’s speech last week.’”

Is this text generator truly groundbreaking or is the delay in release just a tactic to attract attention to it?

Submission + - Aventus blockchain-based ticketing system aims to wipe out ticket touts

umafuckit writes: The Guardian reports on Aventus, an opensource protocol designed to eliminate fraud and touting for large events. The Aventus Protocol would allow event organisers to give each ticket a unique identity that is tied to its owner. Since each ticket is a linked list of records, where each new one contains an encrypted version of the previous one, they cannot be faked. The software also allows event promoters to keep an easy record of who owns the ticket, which means they can control the prices. The protocol was launched at Imperial College London last week and will be trialed at this year's world cup, where it will handle 10,000 ticket sales.

Submission + - 50 million Facebook profiles harvested (theguardian.com)

umafuckit writes: A whistleblower has revealed how Cambridge Analytica stole personal information from Facebook in early 2014 to build a system that could profile individual US voters. The data analytics firm, that worked with Trump’s election team and the Brexit campaign, harvested millions of Facebook profiles in the tech giant’s biggest ever data breach. This has been confirmed by a Facebook statement, says The Guardian.

Submission + - Elon Musk cancels blogger's Tesla order after he complains about launch event

umafuckit writes: Blogger Stewart Alsop wrote an open letter to Elon Musk following a supposedly badly run launch event for the Model X. Alsop complained that the event started almost 2 hours late and was unable to test drive the car (for which has put down a deposit). In response, Musk cancelled Alsop's pre-order saying "Must be a slow news day if denying service to a super rude customer gets this much attention".
