Journal tuxette's Journal: here we go again... *sigh* 9

No, you asshat, I'm not going to leave this area. I paid for my membership and I have as much of a right to use the equipment as everyone else who has paid for their membership. I don't care how long I've been here already. I'm not finished with my workout and I'm not going to leave until I'm done. I really don't care if you're not allowed to train in the same space as women. It's your problem, not mine. And if you have a problem sharing training space with a female, then you can sit and wait until I'm done. But get yourself a paper, it might take a while. Since I'm going to draw out my workout. Just to be a bitch. Not that it's unjustified or anything. You can rant and rave and hiss and threaten me all you want. You don't scare me. In fact, I'm really trying not to laugh at you. What? You're off to tell the trainer on me? Ooooh, how cute, speaking in your native language to him. And by the look on your face, I guess you didn't like the answer he gave you. Boo hoo hoo.

  • Was this guy's problem religious or was he just nuts in some other way?

You should have started doing twists with a barbell - if he came too close to rant and hiss, he would have had to deal with physical pain as well. ;)

    • I think he was just nuts in some way or other. A lot of the immigrant guys that go to this gym are religious (I guess, judging from their absence during Ramadan) but they don't really bother me and in return, I don't bother them.
  • It never ceases to amaze me how some people feel like their "rights" trump those of others. Happily, the most effective way to piss them off is usually just to be totally unperturbed while not giving in. (At least, to *appear* unperturbed!)
    • It never ceases to amaze me either, and I don't just get it from the foreign men, but occasionally the shiny white (though older) Norwegian men as well.

My favorite way of getting back is not just being cold, but also insulting them so subtley that it takes them a while before they realize that they have been insulted. And of course, laughing at them the more pissed off they get.

  • You rock! Let him stew in his own testosterone-laden juice. You have rights, too, and added to that, you have the right of being there first. Plus, you've got enough sense not to choose a faith that puts so many silly restrictions upon your life. He loses. :)

Hope you had a fun workout, and that you plan to do many more, soon, if only to allow you to rub it in that you're at least as good as he thinks he is :)

    Bwahahaha!
    • Well...I didn't really say much to that guy, other than "I'm not leaving here until I'm done with my workout" in its various ways. Otherwise it was just hard glares, eye-rolling, and shrugs. And of course, the funny face I make when I try not to laugh.

As far as choice of faith or beliefs otherwise, I don't think he had much of a choice when he was growing up. Most people don't. He'll hopefully be de-assholed after living here for a while (and I know they're not all assholes), but who knows. I'm not going

      • It is kind of interesting, though, how powerful cultural conditioning can be and how reflex-like responses to perceived unacceptable behaviour are.

Take personal space and body language [womencentral.net], for instance.

        • Yep, and this kind of information is especially good to know when travelling. When I'm in other countries, I respect their laws and norms, even though I may not agree with them. If I don't like their laws and norms, I travel in other countries. Yes, it is that simple.

But when you're moving to a new country...hmm... While I have sympathy for those who have to adjust to new "social rules," there is no way in hell I'm going to accomodate for someone with sexist attitudes. I don't care if it's racist, or not

  • While we're on the subject, what is the generally accepted protocol (in America, not Norway) when it comes to sharing or giving up workout equipment? At the little mini-gym where I live, all the weight training is via one of them all-in-one circuit training thingies. I usually do ten sets of twenty. Should I expect someone to wait until I finish all ten (about half an hour), or take turns, or what?
