The UK government wants to introduce what may become a mandatory universal identity card with iris scans and fingerprints (and maybe even DNA samples) of the holders. This is supposedly to reduce crime in the form of benefit fraud and illegal immigration in addition to everything else. It is being touted as a panacea and infallible. It will be impossible to forge, scare away criminals and the innocent have nothing to fear.

Do we never learn? Has history been forgotten? Do we really trust politicians that much nowadays?
