So clumping AND deoderizing is the only sane way to go. That being said, one of my cats has some IBS-like symptoms (think StB's MMH&I problems and you got the picture) and switching to a high-protein diet wasn't enough, so we started using Swheat kitty litter. Which is sort of clumping, but is far inferior to Tidy Cats in terms of clumping, dust generated, ease-of-sifting, and odor control. But it has the one benefit of no more bloody stool.

It was supposed to be Outdoors == Toilet > Clumping > Regular. Meaning letting the furry buggers go outside or training them to go in the toilet is best, followed by clumping kity litter, followed by old school.
Of course Gritty-Kitty brand kitty litter is the very best. And the tastiest!
Actually, it's oftentimes healthier to keep a cat indoors, if you have enough room for them to run around -- they don't pick up parasites, they don't get fleas, they don't get into the neighbours' garbage, and they also don't get into fights with the neighbourhood strays and other roaming fauna -- or the traffic, for that matter. Besides that, in an area where rabies is endemic to the point where people leave rabies-vaccine bait out for the wildlife, keeping a cat indoors is actually not a bad idea.
