Comment KYC/AML Caused this (Score 2, Interesting) 17

Well-intentioned KYC/AMC laws meant Coinbase had to have this information on file. This kind of extortion and theft would not be possible if Coinbase didn't have the info in the first place. Coinbase bears responsibility for having poor systems in place, but government regulators are ultimately the responsible as well.

Comment Disposal (Score 2) 223

In ten years the next environmental crisis will be the disposal of the batteries. By attempting to mitigate climate change we're causing another huge problem. It all has an eerie ring to the 80s and early 90s when we were all told to switch to plastic grocery bags to save the trees. Now we realize that was a mistake, but the damage has been done. Sadly the very idea that grocery bags were depleting our forests was a misnomer to start with. It turned out the cheap pulp used for bags was either from sustainable tree farms or from lumber waste.

The numbers are off by an order of magnitude. GPS satellites are not in geosynchronous orbit, the are in MEO. GEO orbit is approximately 22,236 MILES above sea level, or 117,406,000 feet above sea level! MEO is lower, about 12,500 miles or 66,000,000 feet above sea level. Also, GPS satellites transmit at 50 watts or less. Given these distances and power levels it is incredibly easy to overpower GPS from the ground.

It's a good feeling to be free of them. I left during the pandi when their shipping times went through the roof but they declined to refund my prime membership. I argued that they advertise 2-day shipping, if it takes 3+ days, I should get a refund of my Prime dues for that period. They replied that it's "2 day shipping once the item ships," that delays before the item ships don't count. Complete hogwash.

I was against Trump in 2016 because he was too ... middle of the road. As a libertarian he seemed too Statist to me. Now? He's our only hope. The elites in federal and state government are doing everything they can to undermine him because they can't control him. Four more years is essentially a given. It will be a landslide like Reagan was in '84. The Dems put forward the creepy, corrupt Clinton in '16. She is and was still a better candidate than Biden, so he doesn't have a chance. What are the chances they declare Biden unfit to run so the DNC just puts in whoever they want, AKA Clinton?

Few are discussing WHY PPE is in short supply. There are a few factors including the JIT supply chain that isn't resilient in a crisis, and also we're using way more than usual (often wastefully) but a key reason is that MOST PPE is made in China and they aren't fulfilling orders. Why isn't anyone angry at Chinese manufacturers for not fulfilling orders, or mad that most of such manufacturing was shipped overseas in the first place? We need to re-think how much we rely on the Chiners and put blame where blame is due.

So by those numbers the strain spreading in the U.S. ha a MAXIMUM of 1.2% death rate, way lower than the WHO estimates. With influenza greater than 60% of flu cases are undiagnosed with official viral testing. It is safe to say an even higher rate of COVID-19 cases are undiagnosed because of the restricted availability of test kits, but, for the sake of argument, let's just keep the 60%. That means there is actually more like 200,000 people infected in the U.S. currently. 1,000 deaths in 200,000 is a .5% death rate, roughly comparable with a bad influenza year. Why are we so upset?

Headline was misleading and the alarm in the headline was misplaced.
