I won't state the company but a similar accidental deletion of a huge number of records from a database occurred at a company I was working for. This was a DBA who'd been working there for a considerable time, unfortunately when he realized what he'd done he edited the logs to try and hide who was responsible. Naturally he got fired but (at least from the gossip I heard) the principal reason for firing him was the log business - whether he would have been fired for the original mistake was much discussed but nobody really seemed to know the answer. Incidentally - it took nearly 12 hours working completely through the night to figure out exactly what had happened and restore from backups, although there was still some data loss even though we had pretty good back up provisions.
