We are already seeing how it will be handled. Just have a look at places like the Sudan. It's at those edges of the global economy where we will see the repercussions first. To summarize the action into words, "Sorry, you are not needed any longer. Please starve to death quickly and quietly. Thank you." The robots are going to have a pretty easy time of it when they finally take over, there will probably only be a few million people left by then.

The content companies only have themselves to blame, mostly at least. When there is no way to catch up on missed episodes the only choice is pirated or stop watching altogether. Which would they prefer? Beyond that, cable isn't cheap. We pay $100 a month for something that we used to get for free over the air. And most of the world is dirt poor, so if they can't get content for cheap... I'm not exactly poor but I'd never ordinarily pay $1.99 just to watch one episode of one show.

Appliance makers are transitioning to 3-year built-in obsolescence designs. That means you will have to repair or replace 50% of your appliances every three years! And of course it will almost always be cheaper to replace. In fact, that is their excuse for why this is better -- initial prices will be lower. See how clever they are?

Many of the pictures, taken at face value, aren't sexually explicit. They are only being interpreted that way b/c certain pervs are sexually attracted to them. Short of creating a prison state, we will never get rid of this via criminalization. Trying to censor everything these people might use to satisfy their distorted sexuality is a fools errand, and will likely drag a lot of other people down needlessly as well. Consider by analogy Muslim countries that have gone so far to force all woman to wear veils to prevent sexual attraction by other men. What happens instead? The men just start focusing on the eyes.

Moore's law ended in 2006 (heard it straight from an Intel engineer). In it's place they have been focusing on multi-processing and power savings.* In doing so they learned they could make even more money through a much slower upgrade time-table. They do have tech on the back burner to roll out that will have huge improvements on performance (optical interconnects, for instance) but they are going to roll that stuff out like molasses going up a hill. Greed has really taken hold of everything these days.

The U.S. Patent system has become a travesty. Rulings like this make me sick to my stomach. "Fast track" should never have passed legal muster.

Moreover, it bothers me that the government can take someone's physical property to build a road or even a mall, but they don't apply eminent domain to life saving intellectual property.
