Have been reading journals but not really keeping up -- the
So I am bastard now asking for help. Am looking for a new monitor to replace the getting old 17in CRT. Am also buying some reading glasses (they are being made and I will have them in a week or so).
Do I need a DVI port in the monitor? Current graphics (onboard Intel 945 chipset) has no DVI output, but graphics card will be next purchase.
Is DVI useful/the future?

The amount of crappy monitors out there is amazing -- and dodgy salespeople who wouldn't know full hd spec from VGA.
But I am not an uber-nerd -- got the latest Star Trek movie on DVD which includes the model Enterprise for Xmas. Am going to open the package watch the movie and put the mdoel up in the study.

PPS: it appears the answer to one of Tom H's puzzle sites is not landlord.com or stupidpeople.com which are the two I have tried.

The monitor referred to has a DVI-D port, the TV only has HDMI - no DVI. Neither mentioned HDCP. Given that linux (or possibly a DSB) will be only OS ever installed here - do I need to worry about something that may never be supported by linux (graphics drivers anyway). Haven't seen anything with a display port connector.

1. What are you going to use this monitor for?
Your second monitor listed is a TV with a tuner which is adding to the cost. If you never plan to have this thing hooked up to a TV feed, it makes no sense to pay for the tuner.
2. Do you need/want speakers built into the monitor?
If you already have a nice sound system, having speakers in the monitor is an extra cost which can be avoided.
3. How comfortable are you with BenQ and RankArena as brands?

1. Mostly computing - but we may have a long term (we hope) houseguest soon (sick mother-in-law) and a spare tv for me (for sport) is half a plan. I looked at big ass pure monitors - but a lot more expensive than a tv and without the tv gear.
2. Sound system is Logitech 5.1 surround sound - should check if I can plug the tv into that. Made me think thanks.
3. If it was for the lounge room - TV would be Panansonic - that is where I am going for the engineering goodness. Rank Arena, Ben Q may be towards the
