Well, parallel programming is still a bit obscure, which as you know is the point of the whole project. Also, many interesting details were added late in the funding process. Check out http://canhekick.it/projects/adapteva/parallella-a-supercomputer-for-everyone to get an idea. Also, do note that the $199 64-core option is dependent on the project reaching its $3M stretch goal, which I doubt it will. To be sure to get a 64-core, you have to pledge $750.

Debian Gets FreeBSD Kernel Support 425

mu22le writes "Today Debian gets one step closer to really becoming 'the universal operating system' by adding two architectures based on the FreeBSD kernel to the unstable archive. This does not mean that the Debian project is ditching the Linux kernel; Debian users will be able to choose which kernel they want to install (at least on on the i386 and amd64 architectures) and get more or less the same Debian operating system they are used to. This makes Debian the first distribution, and probably the first large OS, to support two completely different kernels at the same time."

Nvidia Is Trying To Make an x86 Chip 420

Slatterz writes with a story from PC Authority which says that "Word has reached us that Nvidia is definitely working on an x86 chip and the firm is heavily recruiting x86 engineers all over Silicon Valley. The history behind this can be summarised by saying they bought an x86 team, and don't have a licence to make the parts. Given that the firm burned about every bridge imaginable with the two companies who can give them licences, Nvidia has about a zero chance of getting one."

Legally, they could very well be seen as a transcript of a performance, which might be a form of IP infringement. In real life, however, it is ridiculous. To go to class means for a teacher to share information with students. That fact is taken for granted by all who would teach or learn anything. But maybe it's been taken for granted to the point where there is no law regulating it. Quite an interesting problem.

Sniping Could Be the Next Killer iPod App 461

An anonymous Coward writes "Knights Armament Corp. who supply sniper rifles to the US military have developed a iPod Touch mounting system and software for the US Army M110 sniper rifle system. The use of off the shelf hardware no doubt cut costs and allowed rapid development of this system." If it automatically played a theme song after every head shot, this would be the coolest rifle accessory ever.
