This one I *knew* was going to be a waste of time.
Refuses to give any description of what he wants until I sign an NDA, so of course I told him that I wasn't going to waste my time with him, that I had to have some idea of what he wanted, so I could decide if it was worth discussing.
Finally I get back another email
Oh, and forget about just customizing an open-source package - he wants to own the code, and it has to all be custom code.
Another one of those "dime a dozen get-rich quick ideas" people. Stupid+greedy. Fortunately, his "project" will never see the light of day.
Such is the internet in 2010 - it's the same internet as 1995, just with even more line noise.

...but isn't Kijiji a copy of craigslist? Isn't craigslist just the obvious step of taking classified ads and putting them on teh intarwebz?
So what you've got, if I've understood correctly, is a get-rich-quick schemer who wants to make a clone of the Canadian clone of the US clone of newspaper classified sections. Throw in his code demands, and I doubt he'll get much programmed even if he happens to have a nerdy kid relative who can be temporarily dazzled with promises of 1997-style internet riches. Wai

Of course that's all it is. I remember during the dot-com boom how every stupid idea was getting money thrown at it. Nothing has changed. Even today, people figure they'll just copy what someone else is doing, and that is "good enough to make a fortune to teh moon!"
Of course, when you ask them what the ultimate revenue model is - uh, well, um ...
Everyone falls back on advertising, forgetting that if you partner with an ad company (google, yahoo, etc) you cut your revenues by a lot, and you're not offer

I wonder if the VCs have gotten any smarter. I respect John Doerr greatly. In the late '90s, everyone "respected" him, but most of his "fans" didn't even understand what had made him so successful. Doerr invested in high-tech and internet businesses that made Kleiner Perkins a lot of money. But then all the VCs, instead of seeing that the businesses that made Doerr and KPCB a lot of money had viable revenue models and at least plausible paths to profitability, some by creating new niches. Yeah, that's been one of the weirder situations.
But on the job thing, it's not even a question of putting bosses on their knees - they're being just as much screwed over by the current way of doing things. Do you think they like spending good money on half-assed recruiters? So of course, when the candidate comes in, she had better be good, or else, because they've already invested capital in the process, and their expectation is "let's hope the recruiter didn't screw up again."
